How Much for a Life of Lies? by RJ Scott Release Blitz

Shadow Team 3. How Much for a Life of Lies? RJ Scott.

Posing as a couple leads to passionate nights and dangerous days, but when their undercover mission implodes, revenge is everything, love is impossible, and they have nowhere left to run.

Zach has always been a man torn between duty and family. Strong, capable, and fiercely dedicated to being a SEAL, he’s made countless sacrifices to ensure the safety of his son and his country. Driven by guilt, he leaves newborn Charlie in the care of his estranged twin brother, and no one, not even his self-destructive team mate, Kai, can make him change his mind. Their partnership can never be anything but a clash of personalities, with Kai’s fiery nature and Zach’s stubborn focus on duty, but as they navigate their latest undercover mission, one more stolen moment is all it takes for every barrier between them to disintegrate.

Kai, former 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron, raised in a survivalist environment, is a skilled helicopter pilot, a loner, and never wanted a partner. When he’s kicked out of the service for not being a team player, he moves from black ops to the new Shadow Team, alongside Zach. The team wants his ability to color outside the lines, and challenge authority—he just wants a job that gets him into the action.

As their covert operation in the Canadian wilderness takes a dangerous turn, they run for survival, hemmed in by imminent dangers. With no one else to trust, they must lean on each other. But as their bond deepens, and passion explodes, will they live to see another day?

Excerpt

He was laying down protective fire in controlled bursts, but what did he think was going to happen when the bullets ran out? With grim determination, he fired his weapon, each shot aimed at the enemy, but stopping my team from getting close. How had he not gotten himself killed yet? I closed the distance between us, moving swiftly and silently. A body lay behind the man with the weapon—a captor in flowing white, blood in a pool under him, his eyes wide and vacant, his throat cut. I jumped over the crumpled heap of man, reached out of the door, exposing myself to bullets, and gripped the gunman by the scruff of his neck. He whirled on me, his knees bent, already pivoting to take me down as we fell backward into the gloom. His eyes widened in recognition as his fist met my eye socket, but he was exhausted and beaten and I shoved him down with a knee to his lower back, holding him away from the line of fire and then dragging him into the relative safety of the darkened interior of the house.

“Stay down,” I ordered. Despite his exhaustion, evidenced by his hollow cheeks, dulled eyes, and blood-covered body, I recognized him from the pre mission briefing—Kai Henderson, 427 co-pilot. His clothes hung loose on him, evidence of the weight he had lost during the three weeks’ captivity. Dark bruises and scrapes marred his skin, showing the physical toll of imprisonment, but there was a defiant glint in his eyes and he gripped the stolen AK-47 tight as he rolled to stand.

“Get the fuck back,” I snapped.

He didn’t move a freaking muscle, just tipped his chin.

“My crew, my responsibility,” he summarized, and shifted to the other side of the door.

“Bravo 3, clear, hostages to the rear,” I said as I stared at the scrap of man who thought he could be a human shield to the people behind us. “Fucking idiot!” I cursed at him, but he didn’t waver. Brave or stupid? I couldn’t tell. Maybe torture had caused him to lose his mind? He glanced at me, focus in his startling blue eyes, and despite the chaos unfolding around us, he didn’t move. It wasn’t until the rest of the SEALs breached the door and flooded into the house that he relaxed, albeit for a millisecond. When they reached us, they began to secure the area and half the team split for the hostages.

McKenzie, a twenty-year SEAL veteran and our team leader, faced up to Kai, and tried to take the weapon, but Kai wasn’t letting go, his eyes flashing with defiance as he moved between the SEALs and the hostages, torn between his instincts to protection and the authority of a ranking officer.

“Stand down, airman,” McKenzie said, firm and commanding.

Kai’s grip tightened on the weapon, his jaw clenched, his eyes unfocused, and it was then I saw the drip of blood from his hand, a steady splash of scarlet on the ground. I inclined my head at the evidence of his injury, and McKenzie nodded. Henderson was losing blood, oblivious to it in his attempts to save his crew and the hostages, and for a moment, it appeared Kai might defy the order. His gaze locked in a silent standoff with our leader. I held my breath, ready to step in, but then with a resigned sigh, Kai lowered the weapon, his shoulders slumping, and adrenalin flooding away from him. McKenzie took Kai’s weapon, then placed a hand on his arm.

“You did good, kid,” he said.

“Not a kid,” Henderson snarled. A myriad of emotions swirled in his blue eyes, just beneath the surface—exhaustion, defiance, and a fierce determination to hold his ground. Although his features showed signs of exhaustion, he was all raw energy, prepared to confront any challenges and pissed at the kid label. “Not. A. Fucking. Kid.”

This is the third book in the series, and I would definitely recommend that you read them in order to get the full goodness of the stories – and some early insight into these two characters.

Zach and Kai are an unlikely pairing. Clearly fated to be thrown together and find the trust they desperately need to believe can be real, as well as to learn about love. For Zach, discovering he is a father, and trusting the twin he was separated from as a tiny boy to care for him starts the journey to having feelings. For Kai, it is much more the feelings he has for Zach which are far more than attraction.

As they work together in desperately dangerous missions, that trust of a comrade develops into something distracting and urgent... so the tension and the drama ramp up very nicely for the reader – and the outcome can only be spectacular and life affirming!

Another good read in this drama intense series.

Shannan☆☆☆☆
How Much for a Life of Lies? is the third installment in the Shadow Team series. It can be read as a standalone, but I don't recommend it. It reads much better reading in the order the author intended.

This book starts with Then, where you get to see when Zach and Kai meet for the first time. The attraction between them and how they go their separate ways. And then how they both came to work together for the Sanctuary off-shoot, Shadow Team. Zach and Kai are the most unlikely as partners. Zach is serious and dedicated as a SEAL, Kai does what needs to be done to get the results he wants. They each have tons of their own baggage but when it comes down to it, they rely on each other in the most dangerous of situations.

I was dying to find out why Zach would leave his son with his twin brother that he's never met, and it completely lived up to all of my expectations! I loved everything about it. Zach and Kai were perfect for each other and realized it before it was too late. I hope there is more for this series!

In a single devastating morning, August’s life crumbles. His covert assignment derails disastrously as the family he’s meant to safeguard falls prey to the ruthless Cooper River cartel. Excerpt

I stumbled to a halt, my heart hammering at the horror unfolding before. The car was now a monstrous inferno and I saw Max and James lying motionless on the ground. Panic surged within me, a tidal wave threatening to drown all reason. I ran to the car, trying to reach the back seat.

If Annie was in there, she’d be gone already, but I might have a chance.

Strong arms grabbed me back.

“There’s a child in there!” I shouted… screamed… but no one let me go.

A firefighter shoved past me, a hose in his hands. He attacked the flames, water hissing and steam rising in billowing clouds. And I could do nothing but watch, not even able to reach James and Max as fire crawled toward them.

The heat was oppressive, pushing against us, and sweat beaded on my forehead, the heat baking my skin, but the physical discomfort was nothing compared to the fear clawing at my insides. When the flames had died enough, and the cops were swarming, I shook off the hold and kneeling beside James, I checked for any sign of life. Nothing. Two bullet holes—one in his temple, the other in his chest. A similar check on Max yielded the same result. They were gone. There were scrapes on James as if he’d been dragged from the car, but Max had his hand curled around a gun—he’d been trying to protect James.

And Annie too.

She had to have been in the car.

She couldn’t have survived this.

I’m going to be sick.

Then, amid the chaos and the noise of the fire being quenched, the firefighter found me. His face, obscured by his mask, turned towards mine, and I braced myself for the words I feared most.

“No sign of anyone else in the car.”

“What?”

“Car seat, but it’s empty, and we… ” he glanced down at the ground, “no human remains inside.” His voice was muffled but the words were unmistakably clear.

As the cops asked questions, and Molly arrived, a new panic took root. My mind raced, thoughts tumbling over each other. Where was Annie? Had someone taken her? The heat, the flames, the lifeless bodies of her father and Max—all of it paled in comparison to the cold dread that settled in my stomach.

Annie was gone.

Run for her life? Wandered away?

Or taken by whoever had killed her dad.

Shannan☆☆☆☆
How Much for a Broken Heart? is the second installment in the Shadow Team series. I don't feel like this one can be read as a standalone. It reads so much better in the order that the author intended.

August is a former SEAL working to protect Annie and her father. When August fails and Annie ends up missing and her father dead, all August sees is revenge. He'll do anything to find Annie and make her safe. August goes deep undercover in the Cooper River Cartel and when his cover is blown, an unexpected Army man is the one trying to bring him home.

Ryder is former Army and working for the Shadow Team. His one job is to bring Annie home. When Luca finds her and makes sure she is safe, Ryder can't help going back for August. When he finds him tied up and bleeding, he'll do whatever it takes to bring the SEAL home – even if it means risking his own life.

I was so excited for this one. I needed August's story after what we saw of him in book one. The chemistry between August and Ryder was such a developing thing. After Ryder sat with him and felt responsible for him, it was inevitable that Ryder would develop feelings for the grumpy man. I loved seeing August's walls start to fall each day with Ryder. What I love about this series is each love story isn't so in your face – the suspense and twists and turns of the rest of the story are everything you need.

I can't wait for what's next!!

This is the second book in the series, and I would recommend that you read them in order to get the full picture – and all the goodness too!

August is a man who is losing himself in order to rescue his one-time charge, and almost daughter, Annie. Just as he finds where she is being held, The Sanctuary steps in to free her, and team member Ryder cannot leave him behind – even when things get pretty hairy!

This is a great combination of off-the-books rescue team heroics (in no small part from the overworked medics!) with a very intense complicated romance and start of a new family. It was great to catch up with the Sanctuary team too.

I am already looking forward to the next installment.

Shadow Team 1. How Much for the Whole Night. RJ Scott .

A seductive stranger gives Josh everything he wants, but one night of lust could get them both killed.

Driven by a combination of alcohol-induced recklessness and an overwhelming desire for something real, Josh ventures into a dark and seedy bar and lusts after a sexy, enigmatic hooker. When Josh negotiates a price for one night of pleasure he can’t know that when his time with Ethan is over, he'll be left shattered and forever changed by the encounter. Fleeing with his son is the only means of ensuring their survival amidst the chaos of what comes next, and there’s only one man he can trust to keep them safe.

A hooker who isn’t a hooker at all.

Ethan is on the brink of completing a covert operation that will enable him to infiltrate a human trafficking ring. Yet, when his conscience clashes with his mission, Ethan disobeys orders, jeopardizing everything he's worked for. Forced to escape, he takes Josh and his son, but he has nowhere to go, and now, their only hope lies in seeking refuge in an isolated safe house far from prying eyes.

Protecting Josh, Ben, and a tuxedo cat called Oreo, is Ethan's priority. Only he has no choice but to resume his undercover role, and he must leave Josh and Ben behind.

When a gun is pointed at his head, his final thought is that he’s lost everything that matters; can he make it home to his new family? Or will he have to die to protect the people he loves?

Excerpt

The following excerpt is unedited.

Shit! It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Kill the security cameras, grab the asset, and walk out of the federal building without stress—that was the plan. Not once did I imagine I’d have to put a gun to the asset’s head or knock out my boss. In another life, a better life, I’d never have gotten myself in a situation where I’d signed up for the skin job in the first place.

I couldn’t see a way out.

“You don’t have to hurt me,” Josh’s eyes were wide with fear. “I won’t say anything.”

My resolve weakened for a moment—maybe it would be better to take Josh back inside, ignore everything I’d seen and done that made my skin crawl.

I wasn’t the bad guy.

I could leave and then he’d move on with his life.

How long would any of us get to live after that?

I needed to move the asset—Josh—find somewhere to stop and give myself time to think. I hoped that I hadn’t fucked everything up.

“This way,” I gestured with the gun.

Josh took a couple of stumbling steps backward, holding his hands out in front of him. “Please, you know I have a son. His name is Ben. Let me at least say goodbye. Please.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
3.5 stars of hotness and danger

This is the first in a new series, and was created out of a short story written a while ago.

I have to admit that I did not enjoy how the "meet-cute" between Josh and Ethan starts this engaging read. I get the reason that it had to happen, but the change in Ethan's actions followed by the intensity which develops in moments, it didn't quite gel for me. As the story progresses, it is ironed out and explained better, but maybe I needed to know Ethan better to understand his actions in that bar/room.

Once over that, I was fully invested in Ben being safe, and Josh and Ethan getting the chance to explore an attraction which clearly overrode good sense and job orders! I also enjoyed the mystery and double cross elements, which gave context to the situation.

I am certainly invested enough now to want to read the next installment!
