Heart of Glass by Nicole Jacquelyn

The next standalone novel from Nicole Jacquelyn about love, friendship, and forgiveness.

Henry Harris was living his dream as a staff sergeant in the Marines. When he's killed in action, his devastated family is in for one more shock: he had a daughter they never knew about.

Morgan Riley has been raising Etta on her own, and that's always been fine by her – until Henry's brother Trevor arrives on her doorstep, willing to do anything to help and make up for his brother's mistakes. Their attraction feels wrong, but Morgan can't seem to turn him away.

Trevor is suddenly in too deep. He has always wanted a family, but Etta and Morgan come with complications. Yet as Etta brings them closer together, Trevor begins to imagine giving Morgan and Etta the life his brother never could. But he wonders if Morgan will ever learn to trust another man with her heart, especially a man whose last name is Harris.

This series keeps getting better. Of all the brothers and cousins in this series, Trevor is the one who is consistently honourable and reliably good. He might not be as exciting as Shane or Bram but he is steady, reliable, and actually more complicated than he seems. I loved him.

All the books in this series address heavy themes of love and loss and family but this book is the one that actually tore at my emotions. This book focuses on the family’s response to Henry’s death. And the family’s reactions to the child Henry abandoned. It is a raw and gritty read and I almost enjoyed the cracks that appear in the foundation of this seemingly perfect family.

The storyline around Morgan’s sister took me by surprise but I really appreciate the way the author explored such a traumatic experience, especially when narrating parts of it through Trevor’s voice. The storyline doesn’t fit neatly with the rest of the book so I’m wondering if we will get another book which carries it on.

While this is a moving read, the angst and guilt surrounding the connection Morgan and Trevor makes the romance elements of this story difficult. And the small child at the heart of this story kinda ruins the heat factor. This isn’t a sexy book, but it is an emotional ride.

Change of Heart by Nicole Jacquelyn

They've spent their lives pushing each other away, but what will happen when they need each other most?

Anita Martin doesn't expect much from life. Growing up on the street, bouncing from one foster home to another, she learned to rely only on herself. Even after she finally found a loving family to take her in, she was still an outsider-something Abraham, one of the family's older sons, never let her forget.

Abraham Evans doesn't know how Ani always manages to get under his skin, only that's she's been doing it since they were teens. She is-and always has been-undeniably gorgeous. But he's never met anyone as pissed off at the world as Ani.

For fifteen years, Ani and Bram have agreed on exactly one thing: they can't stand each other-until one night when their anger gives way to passion. Yet even as Ani and Bram begin to secretly seek comfort in one another's arms, they remain emotionally worlds apart. When Ani's life takes a dramatic turn and she realizes she needs more than Bram can give, their fragile, no-strings relationship unravels. One way or another, Ani is determined to survive. But when Bram finally admits his true feelings, he may discover Ani has moved on without him...

Sarah☆☆☆
3.5 stars

I didn’t love the first book in this series, so I approached this story with caution. But Anita has more grit and a few more sharp edges than Kate did in the first book. I liked Anita from the outset and I enjoyed her story more than I did Kate’s. However, this is also a baby-focused romance and just when I started to feel a connection to Anita, motherhood consumed her and she emerged a little bit more bland on the other side.

As with Shane in the first book in this series, I feel like Bram gets forgiven too many times for really hurtful behaviour. I found him a difficult character to like but he does redeem himself better than I felt Shane ever did.

For me, the strength in this book is the way the author managed the huge plot twist shocker in the second half of the story. This storyline pulled the characters together and brought the two families to life in a way that left me emotionally raw and crying ugly tears.

This hasn’t been a favourite series for me and I’m not sure I’ll commit to the next book. I am aware that most of my reservations are personal. I’m not keen on children in romance writing and I’m especially not keen on babies. I do like the adult characters here, but I really haven’t loved any of the men in this series so far.
