The Agent by Nancy Herkness

The Agent by Nancy Herkness

Letting down her guard leaves a woman vulnerable to love—and to a menacing stalker—in a pulse-pounding novel by Nancy Herkness, award-winning author of The Hacker.

After fleeing her abusive ex, New Jersey salon owner Natalie Hart is reclaiming her life and self-esteem. Her fragile recovery doesn’t need a player like former FBI agent Tully Gibson, no matter how tempting a fling sounds. Then Natalie starts receiving anonymous notes, each more frightening and threatening than the last. To help track her stalker, Natalie knows whom to call. Their explosive chemistry together is an emotional hazard she’s willing to risk.

A high-powered security expert at KRG Consulting, Tully has intimacy issues of his own. The stirring hum of attraction he feels with his new client comes with boundaries. Tully’s job: just keep Natalie safe. But keeping his distance is getting harder. Whoever is playing games with Natalie wants to take things one deadly step further. The deeper Tully and Natalie are drawn into danger, the closer they become.

It’s time for Natalie and Tully to face their fears—of falling in love and of falling prey to a vengeful killer.

4.5 stars of sexy hotness!

This is the third book in the series, and I would definitely recommend that you read them in order as the stories follow on from each other. Three men who work together in a very successful business and decided to give back to small businesses are the consultants of the title. And only Tully is left single, and that is how he intends to stay – always the perfect way to start a romance!

Tully and Natalie cannot avoid each other in the preparations and wedding of Derek and April (book one's leads). Neither of them are interested in long term, but the time they have spent together has fuelled the flames between them. It is great fun watching them deal with the pleasure they find in each other, whilst trying to ignore the feelings growing between them.

All this happens in the backdrop of Natalie having a stalker, who is escalating the level of threat. Tully insists on taking charge of her safety, and the team all work together to solve the mystery and let her get back to normality. I liked the tension which developed and the righting of a terrible wrong. Of course, it also gave the couple a chance to recognise the importance of their romance and gave them a chance at the one thing they never saw for themselves... a happily ever after.

Whilst this is the last book in the series, I have to admit I would love to catch up with all three couples again... hint, hint!

Natalie is a sweet woman who wants to better herself, and if she can help save other women along the way, she'll do everything in her power to do so. Even though she has been attracted to Tully for a while, she has never acted on those feelings. When she starts to receive threatening notes, she knows that she should tell someone. That someone turns out to be Tully.

Tully is the alpha male that everyone loves. He is strong and sexy, has a protective streak a mile wide, and will do anything to make sure the people in his life are safe. He is also somewhat allergic to commitment and doesn't have any intention of changing that status.

Natalie and Tully have a great relationship that only intensifies when they find themselves in close quarters. I like that they had a friendship before everything became more. The back and forth between them is realistic and you can truly feel that despite their past pain, both want to see where their relationship could go.

You will not be disappointed with these books. You get a glimpse at the characters for the next book in the books before and you get to see their relationships develop throughout each story.

Mary☆☆☆☆
This is the third book in The Consultants series and is Tully and Natalie's story. In the other books, Tully seems to be the forever bachelor and Natalie has left a bad marriage. They have friends in common and are part of a wedding party. The sparks between them are nothing to play around with. Natalie wants to see what one night with him would be like and Tully isn't sure he can stop at one night.

When Natalie tells Tully about the strange emails, he goes into protective mode. He makes sure her security system is working properly and she knows how it works. He even gets her a bodyguard to stay with her. As her stalker gets more aggressive, Tully and Natalie grow closer and closer.

Will they find out who is after Natalie before it is too late? Can Natalie let Tully in and show him how she really feels? Will Tully accept his feelings for Natalie and make a future with her?

I have enjoyed this series and this couple is my favorite. This story is filled with friends, fun, flirty, suspense, danger, and new love. I want to read it again and again. I hope Deion gets his own book; he is going to make a great addition to this series (hint, hint). I highly recommend this whole series, I loved it all.

The Hacker by Nancy Herkness

When a personal trainer and a computer genius are caught in the dark web, there’s a lot to fear and a love to fight for in a heart-racing novel by Nancy Herkness, award-winning author of The Money Man.

Dawn Galioto is an expert in self-defense and the most in-demand personal trainer at her Jersey gym—a perfect position for a woman fighting her way out of a troubled past and the anxieties that come with it. Then, after complaints about baffling Wi-Fi glitches at the gym, Dawn calls in disarmingly hot, high-powered computer consultant Leland Rockwell. If she can trust anyone to fix her on-the-job problems, it’s Leland. As for healing her off-hours fears, time will tell.

The cybersecurity genius of KRG, Leland sees a lot to admire in Dawn. She’s strong, quick-witted, and sexy. And something of a puzzle—one Leland wants very much to solve. If only she’d let him. Every new reveal brings him intimately closer to Dawn, but there’s another, more dangerous riddle to decipher. After going undercover to solve her Wi-Fi problem, Leland’s found a dark workplace secret. As Dawn’s past threatens a burgeoning romance, the deepening mystery they’re discovering threatens their lives.

Mary☆☆☆☆
Dawn is a personal trainer at a local gym. When a few of her clients complain about the Wi-Fi not working properly, she mentions it to her best friend who is also a client. Alice recommends she call Leland, who works with her fiancé, Derek. Leland, Derek, and Tully run KRG together and Leland is the computer genius.

Dawn and Leland send a few emails that have a flirty vibe to them. As they talk back and forth, the sizzle between them grows. Then they come up with a plan for Leland to pretend to be a new client so he can check out the Wi-Fi. What he finds out is not what they were expecting.

Is Dawn's beloved boss a part of the mess they find? Will their relationship end when they solve the Wi-Fi issue? Will there be a happily ever after for Dawn and Leland?

I really liked this story, and the suspenseful side of the story was the best for me. I love romantic suspense and Leland and Dawn are a great couple. I can't wait to see what the author has in store for Tully. This is a really good series if you are looking for a fun, flirty story with a happily ever after for each couple.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the second book in the series. The Money Man introduced us to the trio of talented men who set up a consultancy, and do pro bono work for small businesses. I really enjoyed the financial issues which were dealt with in that storyline, and having met Derek's partners, was confident that this would be a good read. I would recommend that you read them in order, but this is a good stand-alone story too.

Leland is the computer genius of the partnership. He is currently working every hour he possibly can, to keep the sadness and memories at bay. His mother died suddenly and alone, and he cannot get over the guilt. So when Alice's self-defence teacher, Dawn, mentions a Wi-Fi problem at the gym, she persuades Leland to take a look. And then the mystery and the danger follow, along with a very healthy dose of chemistry. I won't say anymore, but you may start to pay more attention to the usage of your data allowance after reading this!

As Dawn and Leland work together, it is difficult for them not to recognise how they both are benefitting from their time together. Now the challenge is for them to trust that they deserve happiness.

Another winning story for me from the talented Harkness – I am very much looking forward to Tully getting his chance in the spotlight!

3.5 stars
M/F Romance, mystery

Dawn is a successful personal trainer and loves her job. But when she starts hearing that clients are not happy with the Wi-Fi in the gym, she goes to the owner and poses the question of what's going on. The owner's wife is in charge and says that she's on it. But with things not improving, Dawn reaches out to Leland. Leland is an acquaintance who is also a sexy nerd.

Leland is not your typical hacker. He is also quite fit and wants to get to know Dawn more. He's met her a few times but has never really gotten a chance to get to know her. When he is asked to help figure out the issues at her gym, he jumps at it.

What follows is a mystery that will take both of them to figure out. And while it's a fun, quick read, the attraction and romance were lacking. I wanted more heat between the characters, and this mainly felt like a mystery and not really a romance. I will say that I didn't read book one, but never felt that I was missing anything.

The Money Man by Nancy Herkness

She’s small-town business. He’s Manhattan high finance. Together they ignite in a novel about unexpected love and danger by Nancy Herkness, award-winning author of the Wager of Hearts series.

New Jersey bookkeeper Alice Thurber has a carefully constructed risk-free life. Everything in perfect balance. Until little discrepancies show up in her clients’ accounts. Most would ignore it. Not the impeccably precise Alice. In desperation she reaches out to a high-powered consulting firm for help. New York City’s movie-star handsome financial wizard Derek Killion reaches back. All he has to do is smile and Alice’s fantasies stir. A girl can dream, can’t she?

A cofounder of KRG, Derek’s promise is to advise small-business owners in trouble. He never guessed that assisting the diffident but sexy Alice would be so captivating and make it so hard to keep his desires in check. But just as intriguing is the alarming puzzle behind the computer glitch that’s unsettled his client. As the investigation unfolds, they must also confront an attraction too palpable to ignore. Every new dark twist they follow is only bringing them closer together—in passion and in danger.

Mary☆☆☆☆
Alice owns her own small accounting business where she has several clients. When she talks them into changing over from paper files to a new software program, she thinks it will make things easier for everyone. But after a few dollars short here and there, she tries to contact the software company for answers, but she gets no help from them. She notices an offer for help from the larger than life accounting firm KRG.

Derek lands one of the biggest accounts of his career and their company’s too. But the excitement he used to feel just isn't there. But when he gets an email regarding help from a small business owner, the excitement is back. Derek goes to help Alice himself; he feels it will be something quick. But when he is stumped, he pulls in his partner to help.

There is more going on here than either of them realizes. Can Derek help Alice find the problem without stirring up trouble? Will Alice be able to spend time with Derek and not fall for him? Can they solve the missing money problem and steer clear of the danger coming their way?

This is a first for me from this author and I look forward to reading more from her. This story is filled with lust, love, and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end because you will have to know what happens. I hope you enjoy this one too.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the first in a new series, and I am definitely looking forward to future installments. I enjoyed the level of world building and the introduction to the men who started and are super successful in their business. I like that they each have their own specialisms, and yet that they work closely and support each other. Here Derek, the money man, gets his chance at love... and it is brilliant how the author manages to make him sexy even if his profession would suggest otherwise. In fact, I loved how even he is surprised at Alice being a bookkeeper and yet also young and desirable. Throw in the cheeky play on words regarding statistics and this was just the story I would have loved to have written.

The plot centres around Alice using new accounting software which has caused her to find a number of small errors. She is quite certain that there are no errors in her work, indeed she repeats them manually to check... This turns into a massive, dangerous issue – and is really well constructed. It gives Derek a chance to give support to a small business, as he is somewhat jaded about his never-ending work schedule.

Together they work to solve the mystery and stop the crime... and in the process develop a strong affinity for each other and indulge in the pleasure that they offer each other. It is intelligent, romantic, and gives both of them an understanding of what they had been missing out on in their career focused lives.

A slightly slow start, but soon got really good – recommended!

Second Act by Nancy Herkness

Lights. Camera. Romance.

Jessica Quillen, veterinarian for the charitable K-9 Angelz program, didn’t mean to stumble into the middle of a New York movie shoot. She just wanted to rescue the stray dog she’d been chasing. Instead, she’s playing catch-up with her ex-fiancé—and the screen’s hottest action hero, Hugh Baker. The only man she ever loved. The dream that disappeared. The heartthrob who’s now hoping for a “take two.”

Seeing Jessica triggers emotions Hugh has tried to forget. Abandoned by his mother to foster care, he still struggles to feel worthy of love and to open his heart to a woman. His biggest mistake was not trusting Jessica. It was his fault she left. All he wants now is to make up for lost time. But he has to prove that she can trust him.

Though the sparks still smolder, he’s still Hollywood—a world far away from Jessica’s. Now it’s up to her to give their love story a happily ever after.

Jessica and Hugh were hot and heavy once before. When Jessica realized that Hugh was destined to be famous, she knew that in order for him to follow his own dreams, she had to break her own heart. What she didn't foresee were the aftereffects – Hugh shut her completely out.

Now, running her own vet practice, she also is still a bleeding heart for all animals. When she is literally run in to by her old flame, she will have to guard herself to make sure that she isn't caught off guard again.

Hugh has never forgotten Jessica. With his past, it was just another blow that he expected in a long line of disappointing memories of his past. Despite his fame, he is envious of his good friend, Gavin's life. Hugh wants someone to come home to. But he also understands what he's asking of a partner. To have their lives splashed in public is no easy thing.

Despite their once different views on what would take their relationship to work, both Jessica and Hugh still burn up the sheets and have amazing chemistry. I liked watching them both realize that they could appreciate what the other does for a living, without sacrificing their own happiness or job.

It is a sweet second chance romance with some lovable pups, risk taking, and in the end, both will have to decide if they are worth the risk. I have enjoyed the previous books in this series and this one didn't disappoint.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
4.5 stars of hotness

This is the second book in the series, and it is in the same world as the first book, but I don't think you need to read them in order.

I really enjoyed this second chance romance, which came about eight years after the couple first split. I found the background to their relationship really well explained. Hugh's poor behaviour in respecting Jessica's ability to cope on the red carpet had caused such a rift between them, that she felt she was holding him back. Now that he has made it big, he realises that what he had with her was real, and is very keen to try and make it work... unsurprisingly she is less certain!

As we get to understand them both better through their work, their commitment to others, and their actions, it is entirely believable that they will find their way once again... but not for a minute that it will be simple. Be ready for some very descriptive writing – both of the very sexy nature, and for the not so pleasant aftereffects of looking after some very sick dogs with digestive issues (shall we say!).

Lovely book with some fun, plenty of reflection, and a hopeful future outcome.

Second Time Around by Nancy Herkness

A former love makes a lasting impression in a warm and sexy romance from Nancy Herkness.

Kyra Dixon, a blue-collar girl from the boondocks, is dedicated to her job at a community center that matches underprivileged kids with rescue dogs. When she runs into Will Chase—Connecticut blue blood, billionaire CEO, and her old college crush—she’s surprised that he asks a favor from her: to be his date for his uptight family’s dreaded annual garden party. If his parents don’t approve, all the better.

Kyra’s not about to say no. It’ll give her a chance to be oh-so-close to her unrequited love. What begins as a little fling turns so mad hot, so fast, that Kyra finds herself falling all over again for a fantasy that won’t come true. How can it? She doesn’t belong in Will’s world. She doesn’t want to. But Will does want to belong in hers.

All he has to do now is prove it. Will is prepared to give up whatever is necessary to get what his heart most desires.

M/F Romance

Kyra is a hard working, honest woman who has had a rough go of things. She was an only child and had a mother who never quite understood her and a father who adored her. When tragedy strikes, she has to leave behind her dreams. But she never forgot her best friend from her dreaming days, Will. Despite the fact that he was dating her roommate, Will and Kyra formed such a bond – talking and quoting. She never forgot him.

Will has built an empire just to spite his father. He was walking the path his parents wanted for so long that when he finally broke free, he wanted to prove to his parents that he didn't need their input – that he would succeed without their guidance. Even with all of his success, Will still has this driving need to continuously prove his parents wrong. When he runs in to Kyra again, she awakens memories and desires in him that were long buried. Is he truly happy? Is being successful enough? When he sees how hard she works and why, it reminds him of the dreams he had while they were both in school.

This is a sweet second chance romance. Both characters have baggage that they need to work through and they also have a connection that goes beyond romantic. Their friendship is solid and because of that, they are able to build a connection again fairly quickly. Missteps happen and communication isn't perfect. Both will have to decide if their connection is more important than their dreams or if their connection will change their dreams.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the first full book in a new series – although the Second to None novella precedes it, and we get to meet Max and Emily again here. We also meet up with old friends from the Wager of Hearts series – which is fun if you have read them.

Kyra takes on the role of 'fake' girlfriend to her college crush Will, as he needs support at a family event, although all she can see is that he has made a success of his life since college. They certainly have an entertaining day, which inevitably leads to more. However, both of them are tied down by their pasts, and it really isn't clear how they can get past it. Kyra is convinced she is not worthy, and it is best if she ends it before it hurts even more – a logic which I have never found to work! And Will is floundering after a failed relationship, and the pressures levied by the expectation of his parents.

It is fun to see both places where Kyra works; the care that she takes with the after-school club youngsters and the persona she develops when a cocktail waitress. The links with Will's chosen business, also in catering, creates some links between them beyond the clear chemistry that they have. Inevitably there are some rocky patches, and really Will needs to stop thinking and feel more – but he gets there in the end, thankfully.

For a fun summer read, this would hit the spot. I am looking forward to seeing who features in the next novel.

Emily lost her husband to the war and is trying to keep things the same for herself and her daughter, Izzy.

Emily is trying to get her K-9 after school program off the ground. However, investors believe that while the program has merit, she is too much of a risk. She is desperate and goes to the one person who could help her – a friend who lost touch after he moved away.

Max is at the top of his field. He is successful and has so much money. What he doesn't have is Emily. He grew attached years ago when he was working with Emily's husband, Jake, and he ran away in order to maintain the relationship that he had formed with Jake and Emily.

Max and Emily reconnect, but work threatens to tear them apart again. How much sacrifice is Emily going to have to suffer and what will Max do when his relationship is jeopardized again?

Izzy is adorable and I love how resilient she is throughout the story.

This is a quick story about finding love again. I hope that we do get to see more into this story, as I felt that the ending was somewhat unfinished.

Lee’Anne☆☆☆
Though I liked it, I honestly found this story quite odd. First and foremost, it starts off with Emily looking for funding for a children's center to expand and be able to have dogs and a garden – to me, it just wasn't a big enough cause for half million dollars to need to be raised. Getting past that, when Emily goes to a man from her past for help, Max comes to take a tour of the children's center to decide about funding. Emily's personal funds are also tight and she reveals her 9-year-old is left home with a sitter while she's at work; I find it odd that working at a children's center she didn't bring her daughter to work with her to save money. Then she has one of the children living at the center because his parents kicked him out but she's able to text this kid; I don't see a parent having kicked their child out still paying for a phone.

Now, though I found the above things and a few other quirks inconsistent and a bit odd, I did still like the story and characters. Max is brilliant and generous and the perfect match for Emily's huge heart, I just love the two together. I'll be keeping an eye out for more from this series so I can see where the author takes it next.

This is the third in the series, and I would recommend that you read them in order; I have just spent a very pleasurable weekend reading all three (and not doing a lot else, to be honest!).

We are left with just Gavin Miller, the author with writer's block as a single man. He has become incredibly stressed by his lack of word production, missing deadlines and feeling the responsibility for the movie crews waiting on his next blockbuster. He is also in physical pain from being hunched up, so finally agrees to see a physio, very reluctantly. Allie Nichols, newly unemployed thanks to her drunken ex-husband, needs this private job to work, so she persists through Gavin's animosity to her ministrations. Then he realises that maybe she is his muse, amongst other things.

The progress of their relationship also gives us a chance to catch up with Nathan & Chloe and Luke & Miranda, which works well. Again, there are issues which need resolving before they can be together, but it is a satisfying conclusion to the series.
