New Beginnings by Joe Cosentino

Welcome back to the romantic and magical place called Cozzi Cove, seven guest bungalows on the New Jersey Shore.

This summer, Cal and his new husband, Michael, along with sister, Taylor, and her wife, Carla, prepare for the first in the next generation of Cozzis. To add to the action: Cal finds his great-grandfather’s diary, exposing a shocking surprise; Michael and Taylor weigh new job opportunities that could take them far away from Cozzi Cove; red-letter Christian and new houseboy, Billy Dean, gets his wish when meeting Jesus and John at the cove; summer guest, Nijad, can’t decide which sibling he prefers—Annabel or Andrew; and Jonathan, an occult enthusiast, encounters a sexy vampire.

As usual, nothing is as it seems when romance blossoms once again at Cozzi Cove. What secrets, mysteries, and passions lie waiting to unfold? Find out in Book Four of the Cozzi Cove series.

This is the fourth book in the series – and I really would suggest that you need to read them in order, or you would be missing out on a large part of the underlying story. I am assuming you have in my review.

We left the three Cozzi siblings at their joint weddings in the last installment, and now we see them embark on their new lives together (if Carla can persuade Taylor to ever be home!). The main focus is on Cal and Michael, as a baby is on the way, and Michael is unsure of his place in Cozzi. I loved sharing Cal's great-grandfather's story through the found journal and especially the final revelation.

Another group of zany guests come to stay in the holiday homes and let us watch as their particular brand of crazy results in love and romance in the most unexpected ways. It is funny to see what guests Mr. Cosentino can conjour up – and fascinating to watch them in the context of the Cozzi family dramas happening in bungalow one. This group has a very interesting mix – and now that Connor has found true love, we have a new houseboy too.

This is a soap opera like series, which it is impossible not to enjoy, but I prefer the family story to the guests' if I am honest.

Stepping Out by Joe Cosentino

It’s time for another summer of sun, sand, suntan lotion, sandals, and Speedos on Cozzi Cove at the New Jersey Shore. Cal Cozzi’s seven bungalows are once again open for love.

This summer, sexy Cal welcomes back his brother and sister, who are confronted with people from their pasts. Connor, the maid packed with muscle and mayhem, becomes the subject of a handsome young psychologist’s study on human sexuality. Tommy, the strapping, bald and tattooed local bartender, is captivated with guest Cory Magnum, a police officer with a secret. Another guest, Bill, a disbelieving pastor, is inspired by a vision of two sexy male angels on the cove. And Cal and Michael reach a plateau in their relationship.

What secrets, humor, tragedies, mysteries, and passions lie waiting to unfold in this magical place called Cozzi Cove?

This is the third in the series – but I have to admit the first that I have read. I have a strong suspicion that the eclectic style would have been more familiar to me had I started from the first one, but I still found it enjoyable. I think I would best describe it as a soap opera on the page!

We meet a wide range of characters and follow their week at Cozzi Cove. Between snippets of their pasts, and what brings them to the cove, there are some big issues addressed. It takes a serious view of what happened in the past, and one visitor reveals how different reality and perception can be. It is not all serious though, and there is some good humour too. I did feel like I was getting whiplash at times as we hurried from one situation to the next, but the Cal/Michael relationship kept it mostly grounded.

Really different style of book for me and though unexpected, it dealt carefully with issues of gender identity, bullying, and rape. Its commentary on organised religion are also interesting.
