Day and Knight by Dirk Greyson

As former NSA, Dayton (Day) Ingram has national security chops and now works as a technical analyst for Scorpion. He longs for fieldwork, and scuttling an attack gives him his chance. He’s smart, multilingual, and a technological wizard. But his opportunity comes with a hitch—a partner, Knighton (Knight), who is a real mystery. Despite countless hours of research, Day can find nothing on the agent, including his first name!

Former Marine Knight crawled into a bottle after losing his family. After drying out, he’s offered one last chance: along with Day, stop a terrorist threat from the Yucatan. To get there without drawing suspicion, Day and Knight board a gay cruise, where the deeply closeted Day and equally closeted Knight must pose as a couple. Tensions run high as Knight communicates very little and Day bristles at Knight’s heavy-handed need for control.

But after drinking too much, Day and Knight wake up in bed. Together. As they near their destination, they must learn to trust and rely on each other to infiltrate the terrorist camp and neutralize the plot aimed at the US’s technological infrastructure, if they hope to have a life after the mission. One that might include each other.

This had the potential to be an amazing story. It just missed the mark for me. I normally really like Andrew Grey stories – this is another pen name.

Day is an analyst who wants to do field work. He has amazing skills to decipher and problem solve on the fly. While he has a somewhat eclectic background, he knows that it will come in handy. Day gets his chance when he helps someone in a dark alley – he's being sent into the field with another agent to try and figure out whether there will be an attack on US soil.

Knight has just recently stopped his destructive behavior – after losing his wife and son in a terrible way, Knight found himself drinking more and more... alone. When his group needs him to come back into the fold, he is in charge of keeping a new analyst alive... something he's not excited about. However, with each passing minute, he finds he's more and more intrigued by Day.

These two were supposed to have chemistry, but it was hard to decipher between sarcasm and what was genuine. Also, the mystery part was hard to follow since you didn't really get to see what they were looking at. I wish that we had more information – I felt left out of the mystery part.

Overall, it was an okay thriller, but lacked some cohesiveness. The romance, for me, was not very successful. However, I am interested if the second book will continue following these characters or if new characters will be introduced.

Hell and Back by Dirk Greyson

Seventeen years ago, Forge Reynolds fell in love… and had his heart broken. When Staff Sergeant Gage Livingston was brought into Forge’s Army field hospital, temporarily paralyzed, Forge sat with him, read his letters, answered his mail, and formed a connection he thought would last. But Gage was sent home, Forge transferred to a new post, and his letters to Gage went unanswered.

Now in the middle of a bitter divorce, Forge is sick and tired of his husband’s manipulation. He's almost ready to make any sacrifice to get closure—then he finds Granger murdered execution-style in their home. Forge had no idea about Granger’s illicit activities, but the killers don’t believe that. They think Forge has something they want, and they’re coming after him.

When Forge’s lawyer arranges for professional protection, the last face Forge expects to see is Gage’s. Can he even contemplate a second chance for them after almost two decades, or will hope only lead to more heartache? Before they can explore the possibilities, they must figure out what information Granger had—that others are willing to kill for—or that possible heartache could become a certainty.

I really enjoyed this book. There was suspense, angst, and hot guys who lost each other and found each other again and fell in love all over again. Forge's soon to be ex-husband is murdered and Gage is hired to help protect him. They used to be in love 17 years ago. I enjoyed the story, the chemistry between Gage and Forge and the hot sex. What bugged me most about this book was Forge's feelings towards his ex. He wanted that divorce to be over so he could move on, then when his soon to be ex is murdered he seems to have feelings for the guys still. Forge’s feelings kept flipping and flopping to me, I mean I get that you wanted the divorce but you never wanted Granger (his soon to be ex) to die, but just because he was killed doesn't make him a saint now, remember all the crap things he did to you? He seemed to push all those crap things to the side at times and it made me want to scream. The book did keep you on the edge of your seat; however, when everything was finally figured out, everything moved so fast it was like the author was trying to hurry up and end the book. That part I didn't like. Overall, good book.

Forge and Granger have been having a difficult time as of late – but when Forge comes home, he finds something he never thought he'd see. I really enjoyed the reader's introduction to this story. You are really seeing this through Forge's eyes and I like how the story is told.

Forge then turns to his attorney for some protection because whomever has hurt Granger is still waiting and wanting certain information that they were unsuccessful as getting. In walks Forge's old love, someone he never thought he'd see again, Gage.

Gage and Forge had fallen in love several years prior, but with their feelings jumbled, miscommunication – on purpose – these two never thought they'd get another chance.

With the bad people still out to get the information they want, it's up to Forge and Gage to fight for their relationship and Forge's life. There is plenty of chemistry, some flashbacks, and a lot of making up.

I also really enjoyed the police officer in this story and Gage's friend, as well. This is a second chance romance where both men need to decide if their past needs to stay there or if they can once again, have a future.

Lost Mate by Dirk Greyson

Wolf shifter Falco Gladstone knew Carter McCloud was his mate when they were in seventh grade, but school and the foster care system tore them apart. Years later, Falco is second in command of his Michigan pack, serving under an uncle who cares more about his own power than the welfare of their people. The alpha orders Falco to marry and produce offspring—but Falco’s already found his mate, and mates are forever.

Carter’s lonely life is turned upside down when he detects a familiar scent on the wind. The mates might have found each other, but their happily ever after is far from guaranteed. Falco’s commitment to Carter puts him at odds with his uncle’s plans, and when one of the alpha’s enforcers starts shadowing the couple, something must be done—something that will either cement their relationship or destroy it once and for all.

I really enjoyed this book. I am not a huge shifter fan, but the blurb got my attention. Falco met his mate when he was 12 and has waited for him ever since. When he finds Carter unexpectedly, he can’t believe his luck. With unrest in Falco's pack, he doesn't think he can have his mate and his pack. Carter was a sweetie, he just had a good heart and was willing to give up his mate for the good of the pack. I wish this book was a little longer, but it was a good fast read.

I really enjoyed this book. Falco finds his mate when he is just a boy, then he disappears without a trace one day.

After looking for his mate for years Falco gives up on the fact that he might never have him again. Until he finds Carter again. Problems arise and the pair are prepared to do what is best for the pack, even if that means losing each other.

I love a good shifter book and this didn't disappoint.

Dirk Greyson is a new-to-me author, and I found the writing style easy to read, with a rapid flow, and beyond sugary sweet.

Lost Mate starts when Falco is only 13 – Carter is being bullied, and Falco tries to save the day, only to be hit with an unmistakable need. In the weeks that follow, Falco tried to get to know his mate, only to have the boy up and disappear, never to be heard from again.

In the present, Falco is dealing with his homophobic uncle as the newest alpha. I was a bit confused at the 180 his uncle had gone through. In the prologue, the uncle was considered the paternal figure in Falco's life, as the father was busy being alpha. Falco talked highly of his uncle, but in present time, the man was a nightmare.

Falco instantaneously recognizes Carter's scent in town, and the mating dance begins...

I won't go into further detail, as this is a very short novella, and I'd spoil the plot. Overall, I was entertained. The romance was syrupy sweet, a bit too much for me to be honest. It happened at warp-speed, even for a fated mate storyline. The villains in the story had single-minded focus, and saw little else.

I think what I found most difficult was how wooden/stilted the dialogue felt – most people don't speak in such a perfect manner: the flow wasn't natural, no slang or cussing, answering questions not asked out of nowhere, over-explaining, going into details to tell the story instead of showing the story. The book didn't delve too deeply, just riding on the surface of the story, without any real human emotions being sparked.

Lost Mate was an easy read – I'd call it a comfort read. The conflict wasn't stressful, the reader knowing everything was going to be okay. The between-the-sheets action was more fade-to-black, and the story was devoid of swearing. This was a sugary sweet, clean romance, that I'm sure will please fans of the author and those looking for a relaxing fated mates type of romance without any stressful angst and/or conflict.

Playing with Fire by Dirk Greyson

Jim Crawford was born wealthy, but he turned his back on it to become a police officer. Add that to his being gay, and he’s definitely the black sheep of the family.

Dr. Barty Halloran grew up with lessons instead of friends and toys and, as a result, became a gifted psychologist… with only an academic understanding of people and emotions.

When Jim’s pursuit of a serial killer goes nowhere, he turns to Dr. Halloran for help, and Barty thinks he can get inside the shooter’s mind. In many ways, they’re two sides of the same coin, which both scares and intrigues him. Together, Jim and Barty make progress on the case—until the stakes shoot higher when the killer turns his attention toward Barty.

To protect Barty, Jim offers to let Barty stay with him, where he discovers the doctor has a heart to go along with his brilliant mind after all. But as they close in on their suspect, the killer becomes desperate, and he’ll do anything to elude capture—even threaten those closest to Jim.

M/M Mystery, Romance

Jim is the black sheep of his prominent family. Rather than follow in his father's footsteps, or go into something that his parents felt was more respectable, Jim became a police officer. When a serial killer targets his town, Jim works his butt off to figure out why and who is terrorizing the citizens. He works very hard, but doesn't really have much of a social life.

Then you have Barty. He is a genius and could also be on the autism spectrum. His behaviors are regimented and he tries very hard to figure people out. He has difficulty with understanding social behaviors, despite dedicating his life to studying behavior. Barty is good at getting inside the killers' heads. And, while he's amazing at his job, he does have an internal worry that he is just like the killers that he studies.

While the story was well planned, I do think that the relationship aspect was somewhat tame and lacked chemistry. Jim and Barty, while they want to be a good match, seem to miss something. The mystery aspect was somewhat jumbled for me in the sense that it seemed to end very abruptly. I really enjoyed the twists while the mystery was active, but once it was figured out – and it wasn't too hard to figure out – then the story just seemed to end.

Overall, this was had some great aspects.
