The Captive Pet by Samantha Cayto

When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.

Frey Bjorkson is an orphan from New World Colony Five. While making a supply run, he’s been captured by a Travian privateer and kept as a pet. Brutalized, he fights to hold on to his sanity and hope of escaping. His hopes are all but dashed when his master loses him to another, scarier male.

Having lost his mate, Rone has given up his old military ambitions. Instead, he’s volunteered to pose as a privateer to root out the arms suppliers of the traitorous males trying to overthrow female rule. When he becomes the reluctant master to a human pet, he has little patience for caring for the scared, battered creature. That doesn’t stop him from wanting the boy, and, as he sets about claiming the human as his property, he finds himself getting in deeper than he’d intended.

Not only does Rone prove to be kinder, he also gives Frey his first experience with sexual pleasure. The way Rone makes him feel, physically and emotionally, confuses Frey. He fights against his growing attraction even while he struggles to learn just what his master’s true agenda is.

As Rone infiltrates the dangerous world of privateers, he reluctantly drags Frey in with him. He tells himself that he needs the cover of being a brutal slave owner, but there is no denying his growing need for the boy. As Rone’s mission heats up, the stakes are high, and the alien master and his captive pet will have to work together to survive.

Reader Advisory: This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture.

Erica – ☆☆☆☆
The Captive Pet is the 4th installment in the novella series, Alien Slave Masters, and I suggest not reading this title as a standalone. I believe the overall enjoyment will be greater, the connection to the characters, and the understanding of the world-building, if you begin on book #1.

I truly enjoy Samantha Cayto's writing style – these tasty treats are decadent for me. Something I wouldn't want a steady diet of, but enjoy the novelty and look forward to the treat when the books are released.

There was a bit of a different feel to this book than the previous installments. Not as dark emotionally as its predecessor, or as light as the first two, yet still with the same flavor. As you've no doubt surmised from the title, one of the main narrators is a slave, held against his will, and the other his reluctant master. So bear in mind there is a gray line where consent comes into play, which may be a trigger for some readers.

Dark fans will enjoy the underlying angst and pain associated with this type of storyline, whereas most romance fans will probably look across the surface and see it as 'mating' in a science-fiction sort of way.

The reader met Rone in the previous installment, in a not-so nice way. So it was a pleasure to be inside the head of our redeemed hero. After the painful events of losing his mate and unborn child due to his sister-in-law's machinations, Rone and his pet creature pose as privateers to infiltrate arms smugglers. There is less of a militaristic vibe and more of a gritty underbelly this go around, with less politics and castes.

Rone inadvertently finds himself the master to a slave he won in a card game, and he now understands how his mated brother felt toward his slave during the events of The Untamed Pet, giving the reader a sense of redemption. Frey, our other narrator, is a kind and giving young man who has been beaten down.

What is on the pages is an exciting adventure involving alien world-building and arms smugglers, uncomfortable 'mating' and 'sharing' in the beginning, which grows into lust on both parties' behalf, with a healthy dose of romantic happily ever after.

I look forward to my next serving of this decadent treat, and recommend this series to MM Romance fans who enjoy science fiction, including the angst and darkness of dubious consent.

Wow! This series just keeps getting better with each book. Keeping the storyline fresh, Cayto has introduced a twist regarding the pet in this installment. Unlike the previous pets, Frey was not a sex slave as part of his punishment for crimes he committed. No, this particular human had been captured when the ship he was on was attacked and everyone but him was killed. While at first glance that seemed to be a blessing, Frey soon learned that some fates are worse than death as he was beaten and raped into submission (all of which occurred prior to our meeting him). Despite his abuse, Frey’s still terrified when his master loses him in a game of chance to another Travian, one who looks even more menacing than his master – after all, the only thing worse than the devil you know, is the devil you don’t know.

Fortunately for Frey, Rone is not the devil he appears to be. In fact, I didn’t realize that he was Narith’s house brother from The Untamed Pet until the death of his pregnant mate was mentioned and he fretted about his misuse of Mac. At that point, I not only realized who Rone was and what his mission was, I also knew who Preen was. Preen’s presence made for an even more interesting twist as we learned in the previous book that it was far more intelligent than it appeared and it seems that their time together was not wasted as Preen and Rone had learned to communicate using a form of sign language. As the pieces and players began to align, I knew I was in for one heck of a read, and Cayto did not disappoint because Rone’s undercover infiltration into the rebellion added an extra level of suspense and ratcheted up the action.

I enjoyed getting to see the development of Rone’s character. Seeing him realize how he’d mistreated Mac and try to make amends of a sort through Frey demonstrated a significant change in his attitude toward humans. Rone was understandably leery of telling Frey what was going on, after all, the young man had known no kindness from Travians and had no reason to trust Rone. Yet his actions toward Frey demonstrated that Rone trusted him before he was able to consciously admit it to himself. In the same vein, Frey had a difficult time trusting that his own feelings toward Rone were real, worried that he’d been abused by his previous master for so long, that he was giving more significance to Rone’s simple acts of kindness. Both men were hesitant to admit to themselves, let alone one another, that their feelings were more than an act they felt compelled to play. I will say that I am glad that the author didn’t feel the need to get overly graphic in her writing when it came to what Frey was forced to endure at the hands of Travians who were not Rone. There was an implied fragility to Frey that the previous humans didn’t possess and I’m glad I didn’t have to witness his abuse. I thoroughly enjoyed the ending and like that Frey and Rone’s future is such that they could easily show up in a future installment. Yep, you read that right – future installment. It was clear from the ending of The Captive Pet that there is still much to be done to quash the rebellion against the Travian matriarchal governing class and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

The Untamed Pet by Samantha Cayto

When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.

Stuart McKay, a young man always on the sidelines of life, has been reinvented as Mac, the beloved pet of an alien navigator. At first an unwilling captive, he’s now fallen hopelessly in love with his master. Narith is Mac’s perfect fantasy lover, so much so that Mac does not hesitate to join him on a frightening trip to the Travian home world.

Narith is a brilliant young officer from a lower caste family who has risen quickly up the ranks and the social and political ladders by making an advantageous mating. A tragedy has him hurrying home to mend familial fences and fend off the predation of another male, while he tries to tamp down his growing feelings for Mac. Narith also cannot bear to leave his pet behind.

Mac and Narith’s relationship is tested by family tensions and brought to the breaking point when Narith reluctantly agrees to share Mac with another male. Mac is devastated by Narith’s seemingly cavalier treatment, while Narith is surprised to realize he is jealous of another male claiming Mac’s body. But more than personal feelings seethe beneath the veneer of domestic harmony and as trouble bubbles to the surface, the fate of Mac’s and Narith’s very lives is at stake.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of non-consensual rape and sex scenes with dubious consent, as well as some brief violence. and torture. This book also contains a scene of M/F intimacy.

Erica – ☆☆☆☆
I'm a big fan of the Alien Slave Masters series, which was a complete and total surprise as I generally don't read science-fiction erotic books. Samantha Cayto's series is like crack for me – when I receive the book, I drop everything and read it immediately.

The Untamed Pet is narrated by Stuart – Mac – and his captor, Narith. Stuart was horribly mistreated by the first officer who held him captive, and he expected the same when he was gifted to Narith, who named him Mac. The reader isn't privy to the time where their attraction and attachment was formed, but later when Narith must go home to visit his wife.

For a short novella, it packs a punch with many different elements that work in conjunction with one another. Speak of what's happening in the Alien Slave Masters' universe, a mystery surrounding Narith's family, and legal involvement that could end whatever happiness Mac has tried to carve out.

For me, the entire book was a testament to just how powerless Mac is as a 'pet'. How he has no control over his person, when he eats, who he allows to touch him. The betrayal of trust when he thinks he's found someone who sees him useful, instead of an inanimate object, only to realize he truly has no control over his life.

The sexy portions of the story were slightly awkward for me, simply because all but one was without consent, leaving Mac to feel betrayed/horrible about himself/mistreated. Once or twice I was engrossed, but those following made me flinch. With the storyline as it was, it was difficult to buy the romance angle, with the short epilogue's ending not suited to the overall feel of the novella.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, thoroughly entertained, but it wasn't my favorite of the series, and I look forward to the next. I recommend this series to readers of MM science-fiction erotica. For fans who have triggers, the book contains non-consent, cheating (emotionally/physically/pawning off onto another), and off-scene MF.

I love this series. I have enjoyed every book so far and I was really looking forward to this book, however, I didn't feel it was a good as the others in the series.

I just felt it was very slow to get started and I also felt that Stuart/Mac was a completely different character from the boy we met in the first book. I know a lot changed for him, but I would have liked some of the old boy left in there.

I really felt this was more of Narith's story than Mac's.

What I did enjoy in this book was the plot twist close to the end. I really wasn't expecting that.

The book itself, once I got into it, was still good, I just wish there was more Narith and Mac, and not just Mac or Narith.

As always, I will continue to read this series as I do love the Alien Slave Masters series.

For me, this series just keeps getting better. Even though the books still feature the human pet and his Travian master, the author keeps the storylines fresh by introducing new locations and threats that the men must thwart. In The Untamed Pet, Narith travels to the Travian home world after receiving the devastating news that his mate has miscarried their first child. Adding salt to the wound, she has also taken a second mate (ah, the joys of a matriarchal society), which threatens Narith’s status as first mate. Reluctant to give up his human pet, he opts to take Mac with him – a decision that proves to have more far reaching consequences than he ever imagined.

Due to the reason behind Narith’s return home, Cayto has the opportunity to engage in more world building as we get to experience Travia Prime and its societal structure through Mac’s eyes – and what a journey it proves to be. Although we learned a bit about Travia’s matriarchal society in The Rebellious Pet, we get to see first-hand how Travian families are formed and function, and it’s kind of like a reverse gender medieval society, with the eldest daughter inheriting the family’s lands and wealth and providing for her younger siblings. Granted, the practice of taking multiple mates in an effort to continue one’s bloodline doesn’t quite fit with medieval England, but it does make for an interesting angle, especially in this book. I will admit to feeling badly for both Narith and for Mac. Mac’s continued servitude and being treated more like property than he had previously experienced at Narith’s hand was understandably devastating for him, especially when Narith allowed his house brother to use him sexually. And this is where my feeling badly for Narith as well comes into play. Narith is trapped by his familial duties and failed to consider the full ramifications of bringing Mac. He could not play with his pet as he normally would because the bulk of his time had to be spent rebonding with his mate. Narith could show no feelings – love, concern, possessiveness – for his pet without them being seen as a weakness by both his mate and his house brother. So even as he strove to demonstrate his continued suitability as a mate, his very actions undermined the bond he had established with Mac. Fortunately for Narith, Mac’s anger at him failed to diminish his love for Narith, so when Narith is accused of a crime he did not commit, Mac does everything he can to save the man he loves. Luckily for Mac, Travian females think even less of the humans’ intelligence, and that enables him to search for proof of Narith’s innocence – but will it be too little, too late?

I thoroughly enjoyed The Untamed Pet. I liked learning more about the Travian culture, even if I was frustrated on both Mac’s and Narith’s behalf when no one would listen to either of them. I thought the crime aspect of the story was a nice twist that fit well in the telling of Mac and Narith’s story – a nice way to introduce the romantic suspense element we’ve seen in the previous books, but in a different way. As much as I hated that Mac was subjected to Narith’s house brother, I was relieved that the interactions were largely clinical and that Rone was not intent on hurting him (like the sadistic owner he barely survived). I enjoyed seeing Narith’s self-realization regarding his mate and how his feelings for her differed from his feelings for Mac – and the conclusion he came to because of it. The Untamed Pet was another entertaining addition to the Alien Slave Masters series and I’m looking forward to more installments.

The Rebellious Pet by Samantha Cayto

Sometimes surrender turns into victory…

Forced to be the sex slave of an alien warrior, perpetual bad-boy, Joel, finds himself tossed into the bed of a space station commander who tests even Joel’s cultivated bravado. While he learned to survive an abusive father, the Travian proves to be a greater challenge. Joel soon finds himself caught between the desperate need to fight his captivity and the unnerving tug of attraction he feels for his new master.

Born to one of the lower castes of his people, Arath has worked his way up to a coveted command. His drive for success has left him isolated from his crew. He has no time or interest in caring for the pesky human pet thrust upon him by his superior. His duty allows him no other choice, so he reluctantly takes what has been given to him. He is surprised by how easily he is seduced by his pet’s allure.

Joel and Arath dance around each other and their growing attraction, until politics intrudes and tests their tentative feelings. The stakes are suddenly raised, and the choices they make may change the course of history for both of their species.

Reader Advisory: This book contains sex scenes of a non-consensual nature, as well as scenes of dubious consent, violence, abuse and torture.

Erica – ☆☆☆☆
The Alien Slave Masters series is definitely in a niche genre, which I will say is like dessert for me. I wouldn't enjoy a steady diet, but a taste now and then is a decadent treat.

We met Joel in the previous book in the series – rebellious and testing of his new master. At the start of this installment, his master is in ill-health, and he takes his pet away from what he'd grown accustomed to as a reluctant home. Leaving Wid and the rest of the cast of characters behind, the readers are placed in another space station, with another set of characters to learn and love.

Joel's master is too ill to take care of his pet, so the young man is handed off to the commander, Arath. Younger and more formidable than his previous ailing master, Joel doesn't test Arath's patience. However, pride does have him fighting back and resisting, then simply submitting with defiance. Joel's, "Do your worst, but you're not going to make me like it," was an interesting, stubborn trait I could identify with.

Not as indoctrinated as older commanders, Arath may be powerful, but he is compassionate, not seeing Joel as a lesser being. He gives Joel a friend, a young cadet named Wen. Between Arath and Wen, both sides of their alien war learn about the other's species. I did get a chuckle out of Arath calling Joel an alien instead of human, and Joel calling Arath an alien. This could be applied in our lives, as just because a person is different, other than you are, doesn't mean he isn't normal. He sees you as different too.

I'll assume you read book #1 in the series first. If you haven't, I'd suggest doing so. For those of us who have, the storyline is similar in the way its lacking consent throughout – after all, Joel is a slave. For those who are looking to begin this series, be forewarned that it's not for the faint of heart. As I said, dessert. Science fiction erotica, with a taboo thread of sex slavery, expect a lot of sex on the pages, with an underlying thread of storyline, and resentment over being 'owned' and not in control of your own destiny.

What was missing in book one was explored in The Rebellious Pet. World-building. Much more political in this installment, there is now a caste and house system put into place, with the females in charge. While this is explained, I have to admit it went entirely over my head. I understood houses and castes, but there were 13 houses, and I believe 7 castes within each, and something about how your name ends in a specific letter. It was all dropped at once, and in a confusing manner. I got the gist, so I just rolled with it and pretended to understand.

Confusion aside, The Rebellious Pet was a page-turner, and I devoured the entire book in one sitting.

Dawn – ☆☆☆☆
I enjoyed this book much more than the first one in the series.

Joel has left the ship where he was protected under the captain, Kell, with his sick Travain master, only to be gifted to another master. Joel must find a way to survive his new circumstances.

I liked Joel. He had fight and didn't let his bad luck consume him.

If you like alien books this could be for you. I myself enjoy a good alien book, so this was right up my alley.

Angela – ☆☆☆☆☆
As much as I enjoyed the first book in this series, I enjoyed The Rebellious Pet even more. I suspect part of that may be due to the fact that Cayto didn’t have to engage in as much world building in this installment, and because I was already familiar with Joel’s character. There is still some world building occurring as Joel finds himself leaving the ship for a space station, where he quickly learns that life on a Travian space station is certainly different than that on the ship. If you read The Captain’s Pet, you will likely remember Joel as being Wid’s best friend. If you haven’t read book one, I encourage you to read it first as you will get a fuller look at the Travian society, as well as what Joel and the other humans endured and achieved.

The Rebellious Pet opens with Joel accompanying Firth, his master, to the medical bay of the space station. As they do so, Joel gets his first look at Travian females and other alien species who live and do business there. The influx of new sights and being the center of attention as the first human most of the aliens there have seen, throws him off-balance, but that doesn’t begin to compare to how he feels when he is removed from Firth’s ownership and given to Arath, the commander of the space station. Much like Kell in the first book, Arath has no interest in owning a “pet” and sees Joel as a duty to be complied with and nothing more. That is, until he marks Joel and discovers the joys of having a tight, human male backside at his disposal. Because Joel is straight and accustomed to being hit and used roughly by Firth, he fights Arath until he finally realizes that Arath is not abusing him like he’s used to. That’s not to say that the sex doesn’t hurt, because there is a definite size disparity between humans and Travians, and because Joel isn’t interested in men he tenses up during the act. But as Arath continues to treat Joel with care, Joel finds his attitude toward Arath softening and gradually becoming more. At the same time, Arath stops seeing Joel as a “pet,” and begins to see him as a man who has become important to him. But when Joel uncovers a plot that would change the fabric of the Travian society, Arath’s trust and feelings for Joel are tested and it does not bode well for anyone’s future.

I really enjoyed The Rebellious Pet. Even though it operates on the same enemies-to-lovers trope as the first book, there is no confusing the two books, no recycling of the same storyline. Watching each man overcome his past as he attempts to make the best out of the situation, hoping to achieve a bearable relationship, and then to fall in love with one another proved to be very entertaining. The fact that the sex is out of this galaxy hot (once the two men come to an understanding, that is), made it even more enjoyable. Add to that the conspiracy that Joel uncovers and watching it play out in a way that no one, not even me, expected it to, was awesome!!! We get to see first-hand why Travian is a matriarchal society and I loved it. Although The Rebellious Pet is only the second book in the Alien Slave Masters series, I am loving this series and cannot wait for the author to write the next one.

The Captain's Pet by Samantha Cayto

When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.

In a not-too-distant future, a lopsided war has led to aliens invading and occupying an Earth settlement. Wid is a young colonist who has been caught harassing the aliens. He and his friends are rounded up and sent to an alien warship patrolling the disputed space. His fate is to serve as a sex slave for the ship’s imposing captain. Wid, at first, fights against his enslavement, but soon learns that not only does he stand no chance against the much larger and stronger captain, he isn’t sure he even wants to.

Like all Travian males, Kell is bound by duty to defend his people. Having risen to the rank of captain, he nevertheless chafes against the boring and endless patrol of the space invaded by the humans. His misses his family and constantly guards against his scheming first officer. He sees his reward of a human sex slave as more of a nuisance. Yet the pretty, fair-haired human’s exotic allure is hard to resist. He finds far more pleasure in the use of his pet than he would like.

Kept naked and leashed, Wid’s days are filled with boredom, while his nights wrapped in Kell’s arms turn from fear into pleasure. Even as the humans plot their escape, Wid and Kell form a bond and their growing affection cannot be ignored. When tensions boil over among the aliens, Wid and his friends may be Kell and his crew’s only chance for survival.

Reader Advisory: This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture.

Erica – ☆☆☆☆
4 Alien Stars
The Captain's Pet is a dual-perspective science-fiction, erotic novel between the Captain and his pet.

Humans fled Earth when it became overpopulated and unable to sustain all life. They found an uninhabited planet that could support human lives, only later to be taken over by the aliens who called this planet theirs. This is about as much of the worldbuilding as you're going to get, but it set the novel's pacing, and gave the reader enough to understand. After all, this is erotica, where physical action between characters is the focus, so I'm judging by its peers. I felt there was a good amount of worldbuilding for what it was.

Wid was a naughty human, along with a dozen others, doing small things like vandalism. The young women were let go, but the men were captured and taken to the aliens for punishment. Said punishment was to become the not-so pampered pets of their captors.

The pacing was quick, the science-fiction was easy to understand, the story was fluid. Wid and Kell were both 'good' characters in impossible situations, and the reader could sympathize with their plight. The side characters were interesting enough to want more of their stories.

Just note: this is a series, so not all threads were resolved by book's end, most likely to sustain the plot in future books.

Beware: there are many elements that will not sit well with some. There is violence, repeated force, sometimes mixed with violence. All of what makes this novel erotic was not romantic nor with consent. So if you're uncomfortable with that, you've been warned.

Will I read more by this author? Yes, I'm awaiting the ARC for book #2.

Dawn – ☆☆☆☆
3.5 Stars
This was a good start to the series, however I found that it became a little repetitive in points.

Wid is captured by the alien race the humans are fighting against, they don't want to kill them, they want to make them into sex slaves. Along with the rest of the boys captured, Wid's life is turned upside down.

Kell didn't want a sex slave. All he wanted to do was his job so he could get home to his mate. However, he had to accept the boy as an offering or cause great disrespect.

We watch as Wid and Kell come to terms with their situation and begin to enjoy themselves.

Throw in a good old mutiny and a duel to the death and you have a party.

I actually can't wait for Joel's book as he has fight and it will be a good read.
