Her Kind of Man by Nona Raines

During the day, Roy Girard works with truckers. It's a macho environment where a man is judged by how tough he is. And everyone knows Roy as one of the toughest. On his own time Roy helps mentor young people who are LGBT, and cares about them as if they were his own. He's in love with Venetia, a trans woman.

He's careful to keep his private life completely separate from his nine-to-five. He knows his work buddies wouldn't understand. And he doesn't want Venetia exposed to their crude, narrow-minded views. It's his job to protect her.

But when his two worlds collide, he has to make a choice. In trying to protect the woman he loves, he asks for more than she can give. In his need to keep her safe, he risks pushing her out of his life forever.

The second book in the series, this follows on from book one. Roy and Venetia are settling into a good relationship, however, he has a lot of problems with rationalising the differences between his private and work life. This all comes to a head, and nearly ruins everything. He is a very interesting character, as he is very accepting, but tries to take on the world, rather than relax a little and share his worries. It would be difficult to come away from reading this without having learned something new, it deals with many issues.

I look forward to seeing what comes next in this series.

Wicked Reads Reviews – Nicely Naughty 2 by Caitlyn Willows, Nona Raines & Rachell Nichole

All the Trimmings
Caitlyn Willows

When Chrissy agreed to housesit for her grandparents and prep the place for Christmas, she never imagined the icing on her cookies would be the twins next door. But they are hard-loving men who don’t play for keeps, and she's never played at all...until now.

Joe and Jess crave their neighbors’ cute granddaughter more than they can stand. She’s definitely a game changer they never imagined, blowing into their lives like the approaching winter storm, stirring up their wildest fantasies and making them want with an intensity hot enough to melt the fake icicles draped around her Grandma’s house.

Christmas with all the trimmings. Those were Grandma’s instructions. And while Chrissy knows she wasn’t referring to Chrissy laid out for Joe and Jess’s pleasure--or they hers--Grandma’s got some explaining of her own to do. Like how she knew about those dimples on the twin’s perfect backsides.

Christmas Candie
Nona Raines

Aidan Callahan loves Christmas. His family makes it a big celebration and he does his best to carry on the tradition. Every ornament on his huge Christmas tree has a story and holds a special memory. He’s been hooking up for six months with Val Stenzler and would like to get closer to her, including sharing his love of Christmas. But aside from their hot sex sessions, she holds him at arm’s length. What’s the problem?

Val hates Christmas. The most devastating, humiliating event of her life happened at Christmastime two years ago, and she’s still trying to get past it. There’s no room for fruitcake or mistletoe in her life. As far as she’s concerned, the holiday season can’t pass quickly enough.

Christmas suddenly becomes a lot more interesting when Val and Aidan meet Candie Hurley. She’s as sweet as her name, as sparkly as tinsel, and as mysterious as the Northern Lights. Aidan and Val both fall under her spell, but will the night they spend with her bring them closer together or tear their relationship apart?

Gingerbread Photography
Rachell Nichole

Walker Savidge is one of FDNY’s Finest. He’s also the only openly bisexual fireman in the city. But his boyfriend, Ben Cook, is still very much in the closet, and not comfortable with his own sexual needs and desires. Every time they get close in public, Ben pulls away. Frustrated with his partner, Walker devises a plan to help Ben break out of his shell. The owner of Gingerbread Photography has been photographing the FDNY Firefighters for their calendar for years. She’s professional and sweet, and Walker knows she’ll immediately put Ben at ease. Now all he has to do is convince his lover to do a private x-rated, Xmas photo shoot.

Ben knows Walker is fed up with his hang-ups, but he can’t seem to help it. Every time he thinks he might be okay with announcing to the world that he also likes guys, the horrors of his high school locker room stop him. Growing up in a small community that wasn’t always supportive of homosexuality has forced Ben to hide that half of himself. He’d always dated girls before moving to the Big Apple and finding Walker. Now he’s trying to reconcile the two halves of himself and give Walker what he deserves. So when Walker suggests a photo shoot, Ben agrees, though the idea makes him squirm. He knows the week of Christmas break will be the best time for the shoot. He’s told his parents he won’t be home this year for Christmas, so he doesn’t have to answer awkward questions about his love life, or break Walker’s heart by not inviting him home for the holidays.

This is a fun trilogy of sexy, Christmas ménage stories – fun whatever time of year it is!

All the Trimmings
Here Chrissie makes friends – very, very good friends – with her Grandparents' neighbours as she prepares the house for Christmas. She is unknowingly placed in much danger, but her handsome duo save the day ... and maybe more!

Christmas Candie
Here Adam is failing to persuade Val that he really is interested, but events unfold so that a third enables him to be honest, and her to reveal her most embarrassing secret ... will they have a Happy Christmas or an HEA? Good mix of plot, and emotions.

Gingerbread Photography
Walker is desperate to get his boyfriend Ben to come out of the closet. He is hurt by his denial. Ben knows he needs to open up in public, but then bumps into a woman who gets to him. She turns out to be the photographer Walker has engaged to take sexy photos of the men. Hmmm, interesting moment when they walk through the door ... Inevitably a short story doesn't delve too deep, but some interesting issues which can be glossed over in trio situations were dealt with well.

Don’t Let Go by Nona Raines Blog Tour

Annalee wants a no-strings fling. Eric's all about the strings. Twelve years ago, when Eric Sorenson's date dumped him right before the Senior Prom, his older sister’s best friend stepped in to save him from total humiliation. He never forgot Annalee or what she did for him that night…or the kiss they shared. He wants Annalee, and if he has his way, they'll take up where they left off. And this time, he won't let go.

After a messy divorce, Annalee's not looking forward to her high school reunion. She's shocked when Eric appears at her door ready to return the favor and play escort. Gone is the inexperienced boy with a severe stutter—he's a striking, confident man. The memory of the kiss they shared rekindles an attraction that never died, and she's been on her own for a year. Isn't she entitled to kick loose and have a let's-go-crazy night?

He slid closer until their bodies touched. Heat suffused her, and she grew lightheaded under the intensity of his stare. Her heart beat frantically with fear and excitement. What’s wrong with me? I want him, but it’s been so long.

“I, uh…” Her glance skittered toward the ballroom. “Do you think Dee and Thom are wondering where we’ve gone off to?” Damn it, Annalee. Stop being such a chicken.

“Don’t worry about them.” He lifted her chin and looked into her eyes. Flames raced through Annalee. Her nipples bunched. Dizzy now, she gripped his arm to steady herself. Eric held her close. He wouldn’t let her fall.

“Don’t run away from me, Annalee. This is the first time we’ve both been free, and we have too much unfinished business. We stopped at a kiss twelve years ago. Now’s our chance to make up for lost time.”

Her thoughts whirled while her body hummed with arousal. Her breath stopped as Eric lowered his face to hers. Their lips brushed, then clung.

She’d felt the breadth of his shoulders, the broadness of his chest while they were dancing. How large his hands were when they held her. Now, Eric’s masculine presence completely enveloped her. The boy she knew no longer existed. A grown man stood in his place. Instantly, her hesitation fled and desire roared to life.

She threw her arms around him and crushed herself to him. Lightning crackled down her spine and flared out to her breasts, her lips, the crux of her thighs. Even her fingers and toes. A whiff of lime from his aftershave tickled her nostrils. She opened her mouth to his insistent tongue, as hungry for him as he was for her. As their tongues caressed silkily, she tasted the smoky flavor of scotch.

When they broke the kiss, her softer parts ached, wanting him. She licked her lips, tender from his kiss. “Come home with me tonight. Will you? After the party?”

He laughed softly and lowered his head to kiss the side of her neck. “You mean I need to wait that long?”

Excitement zipped through her. “Anticipation will make it that much sweeter.”

He nodded thoughtfully. “All right.” The low timbre of his voice sent goose bumps prickling her skin. “If I can have a little something to tide me over.”

“All right.” She kissed him again, the aggressor this time, searching for his tongue and inviting it to duel with hers. Annalee was breathless when she pulled away. “Better?”

“Very nice,” he answered. “But I had something else in mind.” Shifting a bit, Eric kept his right arm around her while his left hand settled on her knee. “Something a little more daring.”

This lovely, quick read is perfect for a relaxing evening. It is sweet, passionate and a second chance that both characters deserve. There is a back story, some angst and an oversized dog, all thrown in with a high school reunion, foolish ex-husband, a pregnant best friend, and even the swing shown on the front cover – amazing how much Ms. Raines can fit into a novella!

Angela – ☆☆☆
Don’t Let Go is a quick read about a second chance at romance. Annalee is recently divorced and is dreading going to her high school reunion where she knows she’ll be forced to endure her ex-husband and his shiny new wife. Knowing that her best friend Dee will be there and has her back isn’t enough because face it, who wants to feel like the third wheel. But Annalee is a feisty one, refusing to give the gossips more fodder and tries to prepare herself mentally for the night – despite the dog’s attempts to drag her through the mud … literally (lol).

The only bright spot of the day is running into Dee’s kid brother Eric. The same Eric she accompanied to his senior prom when his date bailed at the last minute. The same Eric who made her pulse race when that night ended in a kiss. The same Eric who is now all grown up 12 years later and who is so hot he makes her think dirty thoughts … yummy dirty thoughts. The same Eric who decides it’s time to return the favor and shows up unannounced at her door that evening to accompany her to her reunion. Eric does this not out of obligation, but because he’s spent the last 12 years comparing every woman to her and they’ve all fell short because they weren’t Annalee.

Eric was an absolute dream date. I enjoyed how he made Annalee feel special and cared for just through his regular actions. Even better was how he accepted her apology later in the book, acknowledging that while he’d known how he felt for her for over a decade, she didn’t and he wasn’t entirely fair about the situation. While the renewal of their friendship and its transition to something more was sweet, the scene outside during the reunion with just the two of them was a steamy bit of foreplay that Eric more than delivered on its promise later that evening. While there were issues that both Eric and Annalee had to work on (don’t want to spoil it for you), I enjoyed the way in which they arrived at their resolution. Although there are parts of the story I would love to have seen developed further, in the format of a novella Ms. Raines has done a good job of moving the story forward without getting bogged down in unnecessary details. Don’t Let Go is a well-written novella and was a solid good read for me. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Raines work.

Eric’s voice pulled her from thoughts of her past. Of her failed marriage. “Dee says you don’t go by Donovan anymore.”

She gave him a tight little smile. “That’s right .I’m Annalee Mondello again. Right back where I started.”

“No, you’re not. You’re light years away from the girl I took to my senior prom.”

“Oh.” She could hardly recall the girl who’d been so sure her life would unfold perfectly, complete with a romance novel ending. She’d have the right job, the right man, the ideal life. How silly and naïve she’d been.

“She was a pretty young girl,” he said. “Who’s become a beautiful woman.” His words were simple, matter of fact. He wasn’t trying to shine her on or butter her up. She turned her head to hide her trembling lips. Of course he didn’t mean the compliment literally. But too few men understood what those words meant to a woman. What a balm they were to a bruised soul.

They’d reached the park’s playground area, which was deserted this morning. Seizing the chance to change the topic, she gestured to the swing set. “I used to love the swings.”

“When was the last time you were on one?”

She laughed. “Not since I was a kid.”

“Sit down,” he urged. “I’ll push you.”

It was ridiculous. “I’m too big.”

“No, you’re not. Those seats look plenty strong enough to hold an adult.”

Rolling her eyes, she plunked down on an empty swing. Eric tied Bobo’s leash to the slat of a nearby bench.

Eric stood behind her. “Ready?”

She stifled a giggle and gripped the chains. Was she really doing this? “Ready.”

He started out slow, with a solid push, but quickly built up steam. Soon, Annalee was flying, her toes pointed toward the clouds. Eric knew what he was doing, pushing the seat.

Together they achieved a perfect rhythm that was almost hypnotizing. No matter how high she sailed, he was at her back. He’d never let her go too far.

But they fumbled when a child’s voice piped up. “Hey, mister, can you push me, too?”
