End of Story by Kylie Scott

What happens when fate refuses to give up on what’s meant to be?

New York Times bestselling sensation Kylie Scott’s sexy, smart and unconventional opposites-attract love story looks at what happens when fate refuses to give up on what’s meant to be…

When Susie Bowen inherits a charming fixer-upper from her aunt, she’s excited to start living her best HGTV life. But when she opens the door to find that her contractor is none other than her ex’s best friend, Lars—the same man who witnessed their humiliating public breakup six months ago—she isn’t exactly eager to have anyone around whose alliance is with the enemy. But beggars can’t be choosers, and the sooner the repairs are done, the sooner she can get back to embracing singledom.

Things go from awkward to unbelievable when Lars discovers a divorce certificate hidden in a wall and dated ten years in the future—with both their names on it. It couldn’t possibly be real… could it? As Susie and Lars work to unravel the document’s origins, the impossibility of a spark between them suddenly doesn’t seem so far-fetched. But would a relationship between them be doomed before it’s even begun?

It would not be smart for me to notice this man in the sexual sense. Though it was nice to know my thirst meter wasn’t broken.

This is a really clever way to tell a love story – I am a big fan of stories with a twist, and this one is definitely a different way to introduce two people to their future!

Susie is prepared to investigate the unexplainable document that they discover in the walls of her house. Lars is not convinced at all but as the story develops he has to expand his beliefs – be ready for some really, really funny scenes.

This is a hugely enjoyable and engaging read – if you need cheering up, then the kooky in the story could do it!

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
Susie is renovating the house she inherited from her aunt and the contractor that shows up to her house is her ex’s best friend, Lars. The mysterious certificate with a date ten years in the future, discovered during renovations, makes for some entertaining conversations and an interesting story.

The pace of the story is unhurried without feeling slow and it was a pleasure following Susie and Lars’ journey. I loved their honest conversations and Susie’s blunt way of asking questions. I loved how good Lars was to Susie. I kind of felt like he was the reward for the rubbish boyfriends she’d had in the past.

End of Story is an excellent adult romance with a unique plot device that I loved, and I think worked really well. Also, Lars and Susie are pretty hot together too. A solid four stars from me.

I had to work at being alluring, but Lars just breathed and it happened. So annoying. Same went for how he seemed to live rent free in my brain these days.

Excerpt

My new neighbor arrived at midnight on a Thursday. First came the moving truck, followed by a Jeep Wrangler. Mrs. Cooper, the former owner of the house, passed a while back. A damn shame. The woman was not only nice, but she made biscuits like you wouldn’t believe. For years the grand old Victorian house sat empty at the end of the cul-de-sac. Not unusual for a small town. Few people wanted to move to the middle of nowhere in Northern California, no matter how picturesque it might be. While the place had been sold not long after listing, there’d been no sighting of the new owner until now.

“What the heck?” I mumbled to myself, standing at the window.

Who moved in the middle of the night? It seemed covert and suspicious. Like something a criminal or government agent would do. Although, maybe they just traveled far and this happened to be the time they arrived. But most people would stay at a hotel and wait for daylight to do this sort of thing. Surely.

The only things ever happening at midnight in Wildwood were: 1. Harry, the town drunk, performing Bob Dylan classics in the middle of Main Street. 2. Me, an insomniac, wandering aimlessly around my house. That was it. Everyone else in the whole wide world—or our corner of it—was fast asleep.

Half hidden behind a curtain, I watched the truck being unloaded. A full moon shone down through the pine trees as the moving men hauled stuff inside. The first guy, the one who drove the Jeep, went straight into the house. He was tall and wore a ball cap. That was about all I could see. Maybe he was setting the place up for his wife and family. Maybe he had a boyfriend. He couldn’t possibly be single, heterosexual, under sixty, and emotionally mature. My luck just wasn’t that good. Not that I intended to date again in this lifetime.

Whoever he was and whatever he was doing, it would all be known in due course. Such was the joy of small-town life.

Once the furniture was moved inside, things got a little dull. There’s not much you can tell about a person from their boxes.

I took the opportunity to once again check the locks on all my windows and doors. After that, I made a cup of chamomile tea. Neither of these things helped me sleep, but the rituals were soothing. Mom always said I had a busy mind. I didn’t necessarily think about anything useful, I just thought a lot. At night, I tended to think about books, bad memories, and ex-boyfriends. The last two were often one and the same.

As a child, I was the daydreamer who got busted humming in class when everyone else was concentrating. (Like anybody actually needed algebra. If you can work out the discount at a sale, you’re good to go. Then again, this attitude might explain why my life had gone approximately nowhere.)

I returned to the window just in time to see my mystery man reappear. The new neighbor strode out to the Jeep and opened up the back. When he once more headed toward the house, the ball cap was gone and his short hair was on display. In each hand he carried a guitar case.

I perked up. Musicians were cool. Unless he owned electric guitars and believed in turning the volume up to eleven. That could get old fast.

As he got closer to the house, the porchlight hit him and… huh. Something about his profile tugged at a memory.

Guess he felt my gaze, because he turned toward my place. And whoa. His lips were a thin line, his jaw set to cranky, and none of it mattered—the man was beautiful. Though he really was strangely familiar.

Meanwhile, with only a lamp on behind me, I couldn’t have been more than an outline. A shadowy person lurking in the dark. Great. Nothing like being spied on to make you feel welcome in your new neighborhood. So much better than a casserole or cookies.

Wait! I knew where I recognized him from. Only it couldn’t be, because that would be crazy. Absolutely fucking wild. Yet there he stood.

“Holy shit,” I whispered.

My new neighbor was a goddamn rock star.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is a really fun, sexy, and hugely enjoyable read. I may have just read it cover to cover – and only slept when I knew it was all going to work out!

Ani has moved home to safety – after a horrible incident, she is happier living a simple, but safe life in her cabin with multiple locks and security measures. Then someone moves in next door... who turns out to be the very embodiment of her rock star crush dreams, Garrett Hayes. He is burdened by the loss of his wife two years ago, and desperate to be anonymous.

Small town life is hardy conducive to secrecy as everyone is in everyone else's business – yet Ani persuades the town to give him some space. This care, that really no one has ever shown him, builds a strong case for Garrett to at least allow her in as a friend.

There is a fun group of townsfolk to get to know, and I enjoyed the underlying storylines which support the romance developing between these two people who need to take back their lives and happiness.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
Ani moved back to her hometown and is enjoying living in the small town but is stuck in her life. She's had trauma in her past she just isn't facing. Being back in her hometown is the most comfortable place for her to be. She enjoys the small town, quiet life. When someone moves into the Victorian house next door, she never expects it to be the object of her desire – the lead singer from her favorite band.

Garrett has had it hard the last couple years since his wife died. He has had a horrible time moving on without her. When he moves to Wildwood, all he wants is to move into the house his wife wanted but never got to actually see. It has sat empty for years. All Garrett wants is to be left alone to continue to mourn his wife. His bandmate and friend, Smith, refuses to let it happen. When he invites the neighbor over, he tries his best to set them up.

I enjoyed this very low angst read. Garrett as a grieving man overlooks any flaws with his wife and only remembers the good. He was never ready to let go and move on until he was. Ani needs to face her own past and the two of them become close, as close as Garrett's grief allows, friends. It was so heartwarming watching the relationship between them bloom.

I would love to see more from this small town!

Shelby – ☆☆☆☆
Famous in a Small Town was a cute, sweet (at times), and addictive read.

Ani has returned to her hometown; she loves her people, she likes her home, and even likes her job. She is content with what she has, and can appreciate the low-key vibe that Wildwood provides. We know she escaped a big city, but we don't really know why.

Her life takes an unexpected turn when her real-life celebrity crush moves in next door!

Moody, usually grumpy, Garrett – aka the lead singer of The Dead Heart – needs solitude to process his new life without his wife. Two years since her passing, he needs to find a new rhythm without all the reminders of their life together. Hoping to find the peace he so desperately needs, Wildwood seems the perfect place to start again.

Small towns seem like a great, quiet escape from the crazy L.A. lifestyle... but anonymity is hard to find when a celebrity is in their sights!

I will say that I wasn't a fan of Garrett to begin with. He was too closed off and relatively mean. I definitely came to love him and enjoyed watching his growth through the story. I liked Ani from the get go and truly enjoyed watching them develop a relationship!

This was an enjoyable read, it wasn't "deep" so it wasn't exactly emotionally charged, but it was sweet. The secondary characters added to the story, and I would be interested in more from this town.

Mary Jo – ☆☆☆
I must admit that this book wasn't for me. I did finish it.

While the writing was good, to me the story was a bit not feasible.

Ani, the hometown girl who moved back home several years ago and is coping with OCD tendencies, and Garrett, the rock star whose wife passed away two years ago, are new neighbors.

Garrett is the poster boy for a person who wants quiet and solitude and Ani does her best to give that to him until Garrett's friend, Smith, comes to town and invites her over. Talk about awkward.

They continue to have a few awkward run-ins and while the chemistry is there, it seems that once they decide to go on a date, the rest of the book feels rushed.

To me, there were many opportunities to discuss Garrett's grieving process and Ani's OCD triggers that were missed or not explored.

“In about five years,” he agreed, taking a swig from his bottle of beer. Because you could take the rock star to Paris and dress him in a three-piece suit, but he still wouldn’t be sipping champagne. Thank you very much.

“That’s the plan,” I said.

“And you do like your plans.”

The man was right about that. Some people could go through life flying by the seat of their pants. Content to not know what would happen next. I was not one of those people. I both knew and accepted this about myself. Know thyself and all that. Lists were my friends. Neatly ordered inventories of anything and everything going on in my life. Places to be. Things to do. Targets to be achieved at work. Planning was how I gave shape and context to my existence which in turn helped me live life to the fullest. Not that I didn’t mind taking a walk on the wild side now and then. I had woken up in Vegas married to a rock star, after all. But being organized was where I thrived. It was my happy place.

“I say we enjoy ourselves while we can.” His fingers crept beneath my long blonde hair to rub my neck. Guitarists’ hands were wonderful things. So much strength and dexterity. Not to mention the creativity.

I raised a brow. “Are you talking about the bathroom again?”

“The way I figure it, this suite has four rooms,” he said, voice low and husky. Sexy as fuck. My panties grew damper with every word he whispered. “The bedroom, bathroom, dining room, and this formal parlor or whatever the hell the butler called it. Now, given how much we’re paying per night, it would be wrong of us to not make the most of the place.”

“Oh.”

This is a special edition novella of the Stage Dive series for 1001 Dark Nights. If you are a Stage Dive fan, it will reconnect you with the whole family and give some of them some wonderful cameos in which to shine... step forward, Mal in particular! As a 1001 Dark Nights fan, you will know that you are going to get a short introduction to a much loved series and may well decide to start at the beginning – and kind of forget everything you learn here! Either way, I would like to say that David really has a poor reaction to events, and you should not judge him on only this... or maybe you should? But really, he has been much better!

There is much to enjoy in this story of how the band's world tour gets cut short due to the arrival of a new family member, and how each of them has grown from the early days of this great series. I like that we can appreciate that the wildness has been tempered by marriage, age, and maturity, and yet there is still the magic that enthralled us as readers in the beginning.

Always happy to meet up with them all – thank you, Kylie Scott.

Shannan – ☆☆☆
3.5 stars

David and Evelyn are planners, except that quickie wedding way back when. When their perfectly crafted plan for the future gets blown apart, they are surprised in a way they never saw coming.

I absolutely loved getting a glimpse of all of the guys and their families, especially Mal, where he always brings a smile to my face. What I wasn't a fan of was how David responded and acted after the surprise. He acted like he was the only one whose life was being upended. And Evelyn just went along with all his decisions so easily. It didn't paint David in a good light. I physically cringed while reading.

I can honestly say this wasn't a favorite Stage Dive book. The writing was good as always with Kylie Scott, but David's character just made for an eh read.

Fake is the first book in the new series, West Hollywood by Kylie Scott.

As the name suggests, Fake involves a fake relationship. Patrick Walsh is an A-list actor but after a scandal ruins his reputation, he needs some good press to get him back in good standing. After his agent sets up interviews with the perfect type of girl, Patrick isn't interested. He hates having to do this, fake a relationship to make himself look better. While eating dinner discussing the situation, the perfect solution presents itself, the waitress, Norah Peers.

Norah has made terrible choices in men, so for the foreseeable future she swears off men. When the opportunity presents itself, she takes it. Patrick is sexy and she was able to move her gran into a much better home, it's a win-win for her.

I loved everything about this read. I was instantly invested in the characters and had to know what was going to happen. You know where the story is going to go, but you can't help yourself but love the ride getting there! Norah and Paddy had amazing chemistry. I love that even though Norah agreed to the arrangement, she wasn't a pushover when it came to a world she wasn't used to. I can't wait for what's next in this series!!

Erica – ☆☆☆☆
Fake is the first installment in the West Hollywood series. Upon completion, I'm both excited to read more and intrigued as to who the next narrator will be.

As the title suggests, Fake is a contemporary romance featuring a fake relationship. If that's your cup of tea, Fake will be good until the last drop.

A scandal featuring his bestie's wife surrounds Patrick, one that is causing him to lose movie roles while putting him on directors' do-not-work-with list, so he's looking to clean up his womanizing image. All the women his agent set him up to "date" just didn't fit the bill, but the waitress standing beside his table was just perfect for the role.

Norah was your basic down to earth Mary Jane type, but where she shined was with the fact that she didn't get down on herself, didn't dwell in how she wasn't perfect, and gave as good as she got. She knew when to roll with the punches and when to hit back, allowing Patrick no leave when it came to his flaws.

The strong, silent type, speaking in a series of grunts and facial expressions, Patrick was the type to just leave a sentence dangling and disappear from the room for hours on end, sometimes not reappearing until the next day. For a large portion of the novel, I couldn't get a good read on him, easily taking the cues the author gave the reader on how Patrick felt about Norah.

With Fake, Fake, Fake always in the back of her mind, Norah tries hard to keep an emotional separation from Patrick. He is her boss after all. His inner circle of support was intoxicating to Norah, how their adoration of Patrick trickled over to her. She easily read between the lines of the broody avoidance, communication barriers, and the emotional brick wall Patrick continuously laid.

Sweet, mostly cute, the pages flew by as Patrick came to terms with his true feelings for Norah. When he fell, he fell hard, and it takes Norah a bit to notice the signs.

Since I loved the storyline, why the heck aren't I giving it five stars?

Maybe I'm just too jaded, but to be honest, I didn't really see the big deal on the scandal front. Shouldn't the actress who cheated on her husband be the one on the do-not-work-with list? Am I missing something here?

It's Hollywood. Not sure why Patrick was blamed. There's a reason why it's called "stepping out." You don't waltz into someone’s marriage – they open the door wide and step out to join you, leaving their spouse alone inside the marriage. The only person who should be blamed is the one who broke their vows. Full stop.

Maybe it was some odd, internalized misogyny thing, but women are not walking victims. Patrick should have gone about his life and let the cheating wife deal with her own fallout, since he can only go on her word. She's the one who should be punished, reputation in tatters. She is no victim by virtue of being a woman. This rankled me for the beginning portion of the novel.

While I love a good fake relationship storyline, the reason just felt pretty tame to me, since we're talking about a Hollywood scandal here. I honestly don't think anyone in the business would have cared one iota. Actually, this would have gotten whatever role Patrick was filling to be put in the media. No such thing as bad press, right?

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the first book in a new series, and I am already looking forward to the next installment. The title gives us all the clues as to what this story will be about – and thankfully both leads are well aware of the situation and enter it knowingly. And even though the premise behind the story is not new, both Patrick and Norah bring a freshness to it which is very appealing.

Norah is a wonderfully practical, feet on the ground, but why not take the opportunity of a lifetime to restart her life with a legal and well-paid role, as well as bringing her close to an actor she has crushed on since a young girl. She appreciates that Patrick turns out to be a nice guy, and has to admit that she is still attracted to him. I really enjoyed her lack of vanity, her enjoyment of meeting Patrick's friends, and her class when coping with all the trappings that come with his lifestyle.

It may take Patrick a little while to wake up to his feelings, but Hollywood is all about big gestures, and he does finally get it all right. Enjoy reading about how they actually get there – laced with sexy times, drama, and some fun doses of domesticity!

Excerpt

“No,” said the bodyguard.

“But—”

“Miss, do you have any idea how many people try to get backstage by claiming they have some sort of relationship with Mr. Dillon?” Face a careful blank, the man in the slick black suit stared down at me. He had a point. I’d pushed through a crush of fans, getting my toes stomped on several times, along with taking an elbow to the kidney, just to talk to this guy. God only knew what it took to get near the star of the show.

“I’d imagine a lot,” I yelled back at him. Necessary given the volume of the music filling the space. “The difference here is I’m not lying.”

“But since everyone says that, you can see from my perspective how that’s not actually a point of difference.”

Adam Dillon, rock star extraordinaire, gyrated his slim denim-clad hips like an Alt-Rock Elvis on the nearby stage. He pouted and crooned about the woman who’d done him wrong. Me. That’s right, I was the big bad ex who’d broken him and woke him to the dangers of love. Or so the song said.

The song lied and then some.

According to the lyrics he was currently wailing, I’d ground his heart beneath my five-inch heels before blowing him a kiss goodbye. From memory, there’d been a lot of shouting, but no blowing of kisses. And having just kicked off the flats I wore for work, I’d been barefoot, my legs and back aching. No way had I been strutting around in stilettos. Home from a hard day at the hair salon, I’d returned to find Adam on the couch. The same place he’d been when I’d left for work approximately eleven hours earlier. The same place he’d been for what felt like months as I worked my ass off to pay the rent. That’s when all hell broke loose. However, it wasn’t the only issue that had caused our relationship to bomb. Nothing’s ever simple.

But back to the here and now. I grabbed the slip of paper out of my front pocket, holding it up for his perusal. “My name is Jill Schwartz. How many of those people claiming to know him have one of these?”

His eyes widened as he scanned the name on the check, before widening again at the amount. And fair enough too. I’d had a mild panic attack myself when it had first arrived. When Adam decided to make a statement, he didn’t bother with subtle. If only I could figure out what it all meant. If it meant anything at all, of course. And that question was what had brought me here tonight.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the third 1001 Dark Nights book from this series – and it is another very enjoyable novella to add to the Stage Dive collection. By dealing with a second-chance romance, it is easy to accept the speed at which the relationship can develop. It was great to see the band and their successes in life and love, and Adam also took the chance to right a wrong and get a happily ever after that he really wanted.

Jill was an incredibly supportive girlfriend, until she had had enough and kicked Adam out. Now he is a very successful rock star, and most of his songs talk about his split from Jill, but with a completely different take on the truth of its ending. This is such a brilliant set up for a second-chance romance, and I love how it starts with her determined to talk to him after a concert.

As the story develops, and Jill gets to meet the band and Adam really shows how he has changed, we must all hope that she is prepared to give him credit for some of the new Adam that he is showing her. It is in direct contradiction to the change in his circumstances, which actually means that he could lie around and expect others to do everything for him.

Fun and sexy read – enjoy!

Love Song is a second-chance love story within the Stage Dive series in the 1001 Dark Nights collection. It's a quick-read novella but you get a glimpse of Mal and Jimmy and their wives, which is always a plus.

Adam Dillion has finally made it in the rock star world. Most of his songs are about his ex, Jill. They had a blow up of a breakup and haven't talked in a year, until Jill shows up in Adam's SUV after a show to discuss why he sent her a seven-figure check. He thinks he owes her; she wants to know why.

The chemistry is hot right from the start. Being alone with Adam is a terrible idea but Jill came for answers and doesn't want to leave until she has them. Even if that means confronting the feelings she thought she was long over.

Love Song is a quick read but is packed with sexy, sweet moments. l would love a full-length novel of this couple. But I can't ever be sad with small glimpses of Mal!

The Rich Boy by Kylie Scott Blog Tour

I’m the type of girl who’s given up on fairy tales. So when Beck – the hot new busboy at work – starts flirting with me, I know better than to get my hopes up. Happily ever afters aren’t for the average. I learned that the hard way.

But how can I be expected to resist a man who can quote Austen, loves making me laugh, and seems to be everything hot and good in this world?

Only there’s so much more to him than that.
Billionaire playboy? Check.
Troubled soul? Check.
The owner of my heart, the man I’ve moved halfway across the country to be with, who’s laying the world at my feet in order to convince me to never leave? Check. Check. Check.

But nobody does complicated like the one percent.

This is not your everyday rags-to-riches, knight-in-shining armor whisking the poor girl off her feet kind of story. No, this is much messier.

“You haven’t told me your story,” he says once we’re seated in a booth and have ordered.

“I finished my degree and realized it was basically good for nothing and there were next to no jobs available anyway. Or at least nothing that appealed. Teachers and librarians are fighting for every scrap of funding they can get while newspapers are folding. The publishing industry is going through serious cutbacks. Majoring in English Lit may have been a mistake.” I shrug. Truth is, I got stuck for various reasons. But this explanation is easier to swallow. “Figured if I was going to wind up serving then I’d like to do it somewhere I can walk along the beach now and then, without getting stuck in traffic for hours.”

He nods. “Makes sense.”

“I thought so. I’ll figure out what I want to do with my life eventually.”

“No rush. Good that you can take the time and space to figure things out for yourself without anyone pressuring you.”

“Just the student loans hanging over my head,” I say.

His answering smile is brief and small. “Grow up around here?”

“Close enough, San Bernardino,” I say. “What about you?”

“No, I’m half a country away from home and intend to keep it that way. Though maybe half a country away is still too close. I hear Iceland’s nice this time of year.”

I raise my brows in question.

“Family.” He shrugs. “What can you do?”

The waitress delivers our food, filling up the table with Beck’s order of half of the breakfast menu. Without hesitation, he proceeds to devour it all. If I ate that much, my ass wouldn’t fit in the seat.

“Want some?” He offers me a forkful of pancake, dripping with syrup. “It’s good.”

“I’m fine with my burger. Thanks.” And I’m curious as heck about his family, but pressing him further wouldn’t be polite. Dammit.

“So what are my future wife’s favorite hobbies and or interests?”

“Hmm.” I stick a fry in my mouth and chew, thinking it over. “Reading, films, music… the usual. You?”

“Lots of things.”

“Such as?”

“I don’t know… hiking, rock climbing. Stuff like that.”

“So basically I like to sit still and you’re all about being busy and athletic. We have nothing in common.”

“No. Wait. I can change,” he jokes. “Give me another chance.”

“You shouldn’t have to change.” I swirl another fry in some ketchup. “I’m sure you’re perfectly fine just as you are.”

3.5 stars

This is a difficult book to review. I enjoyed it, but spent a lot of time waiting for something worryingly dramatic to happen, but I never felt it did.

Beck has grown up with it all, has been immensely successful in his own right and has had enough, so he escapes for some normalcy. Here we meet him in a Cali bar, where he falls for Alice. I didn't really get Alice's role as a barmaid, with an English Lit degree and teacher parents, she seems to have no ambition – usually in a poor girl swept up by a billionaire, there has been a difficult start in life, but that really isn't the case, she just seems to have not been looking for anything better. I found that odd, and it threw me somewhat when we see that she can really hold her own and speak in public, etc.

As she enters his real world, we get glimpses of her fire, of her desire, and of her insecurities, but really very little of Beck, except from other's perspective. It makes his behaviour always visible through the lens of others and really doesn't shine a great light on him. He is by turns crazily impulsive and then super slow, and one minute is defensive, then neglectful...

That said, I did enjoy meandering along with them in the crazy world of the super rich, where rules really don't apply and excess is everything in all situations. It was a fun interlude from the real world, but I felt that there were times where more was needed and others where less would have been enough. Her mother dashing across the country, then staying for moments, not bringing any resolution or understanding.

What I did really like about Alice was that she was unnervingly patient and calm in the face of all the crazy – and mostly chose to trust, when to all around her the word trust related to a pot of money, not a virtue!
