Rock Chick by Kristen Ashley

Indy Savage is a former wild child (okay, maybe not so “former”) and current used bookstore owner. Lee Nightingale is a former bad boy and now runs a private investigation service. Toss together a quiet barista with a not-so-lawful side business, a crazy Vietnam Vet, a pothead, a drag queen, family and friends who will not mind their own business, a few stun guns and a bag of diamonds, and mix them all up with some shootings, a high speed chase and car bombs exploding, then hang on for your first wild Rock Chick ride.

Rock Chick is a blast! A big cast of characters stars Indy, our big hearted Rock Chick, Lee, the love interest and a totally badass PI, and friends and family of all types, shapes, and walks of life. This story offers everything from romance to action and danger, as well as lots of funny, zany, and embarrassing situations that had me laughing out loud.

This is my fourth or fifth read through of Rock Chick (I've lost count over the years). This book gets better with every read and there are many scenes that stay with me long after I've closed the book. The scene where Indy goes with Eddie to Walgreens has me smiling every time I pass the condom section in the supermarket. I don't think I'll ever forget it.

If you haven't read the Rock Chick series, you are missing out. It is one of my all-time favourite series.

I've been hearing about Rock Chick for years. I kept saying I'd read it and somehow never found the time until now. I am so mad at myself for waiting so long to have Indy and Lee in my life. Instantly, I fell into this wonderful world that Ms. Ashley created and I couldn't get enough. It was not at all what I thought it was going to be...it was so much better.

I am a huge fan of Janet Evanovich. She's an author I haven't read for years but read constantly for quite a while. Rock Chick takes me back to that type of writing. I get the same vibe off of this story. The humor and the hot mess that is Indy. The sexy and unattainable Lee. The "would die for you best friend." Books like this remind me why I fell in love with reading. I had so much fun reading this one. I LOVED Indy, she was hilarious and her own worst enemy. Lee was sexy, possessive, tried to be controlling, and, in his own way, completely sweet.

There aren't a ton of books I will text, call, or message someone about telling them that they HAVE to read it. As soon as I got to the last page, I instantly texted my mom letting her know I had her next read. Within minutes I had purchased an additional copy and had it gifted to her, knowing that this series is going to be right up her alley. She has been texting me for days with quotes or gushing about a scene. Even if we're late to the party, Ms. Ashley seems to have found herself two new fans!

I can't wait to see what's next in this series.

I first read this four years ago and have read many more in the series – when WRRT decided to do a joint read through I was the first to say yes, as I knew that it would be a great trip down memory lane. I have read pretty much everything related to this series, and love the link-ins that Ms. Ashley weaves into her stories. It was just as good as I remembered, if not possibly better, as I know what comes next – and unusually, that was fine too.

This is such a fun story, designed to entertain all of the parts of your brain and heart. It is undoubtedly a sexy love story, but so much more. From the way that the baddies behave, to how the cops and Nightingale's men respond, let alone Indy's forays into the world of stun guns, explosives, and diamonds... A great tale of family, what is important in life, and general badassery.

There are so many good things about this book, that really my best advice is get a copy, find yourself a quiet space, and indulge in some really, really good reading.

My primary criteria for a 5-star rating is whether or not I plan to read the book again. As I have lost count of the number of times I’ve read Rock Chick, that alone warrants the 5-star rating I gave it. That said, Ashely infuses so much humor, action, romance, sass, and sexy fun times that there was no way I wouldn’t reread Rock Chick many times over. But I have to confess that Rock Chick was neither my first Ashley book, nor was it my first Rock Chick read. Nope, Knight was my first ever Ashley read and Rock Chick Rescue was my first Rock Chick book – and many thanks to the Kindle Daily Deal for making my discovery of the Rock Chick series possible. For the record, Rock Chick was my fourth Ashely book and my second Rock Chick series book and I’ve never looked back, becoming a full-fledged fangirl who has pre-ordered every one of the author’s books as soon as I was aware of their impending release. With that out of the way, on to Rock Chick.

Ohmigod, this book is a hoot! One of the most astounding aspects of Rock Chick is one that I probably wouldn’t have noticed had I not read book two first, but it’s the speed with which Indy and Tex bond and form a friendship that is as strong as those Indy has with Ally, Hank, Todd, Stevie, and the rest of the gang who have been in her life forever. Indy loves deep, she loves hard, and if you find your way into her heart, she loves forever. Hence The Great Liam Chase, the heartbreak he caused, and the romance that ensues when Lee decides he’s done waiting for Indy to get her head out of her derriere and assume the role she was born to – being HIS. But Indy is a trouble magnet of the highest caliber and finds herself in several situations throughout the book, all stemming from her fierce loyalty to those who mean something to her. Fortunately for Indy (and the reader), Lee is a Private Investigator whose time in the military (and possibly questionable activities in his youth) provided him with the skill set needed to bail Indy out of trouble, at least when he’s not handcuffing her to the bed to keep her out of trouble in the first place. This combination makes for an action-packed read as Indy dodges bullets, searches for diamonds, gets kidnapped, searches for her employee, participates in an unintentional drug bust, takes the stage with a drag queen to sing a stunning duet, dodges more bullets, gets kidnapped again, discovers the joys of stun guns, engages in breaking and entering, takes part in a high speed chase, and helps bring down the bad guy, all while falling in love with the man who stole her heart as a boy when she was five.

What makes Rock Chick so much fun is that it’s a second chance romance full of characters I’d love to be friends with and places I’d love to visit. Even as introverted as I am, I would love to be a rock chick, hanging out at Fortnum’s, watching Burgundy Rose perform at BJ’s (the gay bar), or going for Chinese food at Twin Dragon, because they have fun no matter what. Indy and Ally and their circle of friends have a thirst for life that is contagious, but more importantly, they are loyal to a fault and never forget to laugh, even if they cry first. I love the chemistry between Indy and Lee because it, and their decades long history, makes their romance believable and yummy as all get out. Even if it wasn’t my first read of the series, Rock Chick is a great beginning to the Rock Chick series and one of my many comfort reads, so I’m more than happy that I had an excuse to read it again. Onward with the Rock Chick Read Along.

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
