Eugene and the Box of Nails by Jaime Samms – Stocking Stuffers

Every time it seems like things are looking up for Eugene Kraft, disaster hits. Bankruptcy, a bigoted sibling, and a back-breaking accident have all left him with little money and less faith in the universe.

His last-ditch effort at peace is the small lakeside property where he is building a tiny house from recycled materials. If he can get it livable before the cold sets in, maybe he’ll be okay. Hopefully Cullen, the foreman on the construction site next door, won’t notice Eugene pilfering discarded materials from his dumpster.

When Cullen stops by to talk to Eugene, he’s sure the gig is up—but all Cullen wants is a date. Can two things go right in Eugene’s life? At first it seems possible. Projects on Eugene’s house are getting completed by what he dubs “construction elves” while he’s off site. But like Eugene predicted, his good fortune can’t last, and soon he has a tough choice to make: give up his home… or the man of his dreams.

Eugene and the Box of Nails is one of the longer stories in this year’s advent calendar that I’ve read. It’s also only one of two I’ve read twice this year because I loved Eugene’s hard-luck story and how, despite some pretty terrible incidents, he remains determined to achieve his goal and stays pretty positive most of the time. Eugene’s past reads as an example of the saying, “If it weren’t for bad luck, he wouldn’t have any luck at all.” Eugene is the underdog you want to root for because he doesn’t give up and throw in the towel when things get tough; no, he moves forward because he doesn’t see any other way to be.

While his limited finances had an impact on his choices, I loved the way Eugene was building his house – recycling building materials, doing the majority of the labor on his own, and using the land’s terrain in the design of the house rather than destroying the landscape. In fact, the whole tiny house movement fascinates me, so I loved that aspect of the story. That Eugene managed to attract some construction elves illustrated how nice of a guy he is and how more people in his life care about him than he realized. While I understand his motive behind wanting to do it all by himself, worrying about how his bad luck might ruin the good things he’s got, Eugene’s failure to communicate with Cullen nearly causes him to torpedo their fledgling relationship before his bad luck can do it. But for once, Eugene’s bad luck works in his favor and not only does he get his guy, he gets his home finished just how he wanted. Eugene and the Box of Nails was a heartwarming holiday story that I look forward to reading again next year.

JAIME SAMMS has been published since the fall of 2008, although she’s been writing for herself far longer. Often asked what’s so fascinating about stories where men fall in love with other men, she’s never come up with a clear answer. Just that these are the stories that she loves to read, so makes sense they are also be the stories she loves to write.

These days, you can find plenty of free reading on her website in addition to her stories scattered across several publishers.

Spare time—when it can be found rolled into a ball at the back of the dryer or cavorting with the dust bunnies in the corners—is probably spent crocheting, drawing, or watching movies. She also loves to garden, weather permitting, since she is Canadian! She has a day job, which she loves, and two kids, but thankfully she also has a wonderful husband who keeps her fed and caffeinated.

She graduated some time ago from college with a Fine Arts diploma and a major in textile arts, which basically qualifies her to draw pictures and create things with string and fabric. One always needs an official slip of paper to fall back on, after all…

The Werewolf before Christmas by Charles Payseur – Stocking Stuffers

Ray seems like the perfect boyfriend—he’s gorgeous, incredibly romantic, and has a mechanical suit he invented to become the dastardly MantaRay. For Alec, who also spends his nights making life difficult for do-gooders everywhere, it’s a match made in supervillain heaven. Except that Ray is a bit too into the hit soap opera All My Werewolves. When tempers flare during what’s supposed to be a quiet night out, Alec nearly ruins everything over a stupid bet with an alien gorilla.

Desperate to prove his feelings to Ray, and with Christmas fast approaching, Alec decides the fastest way to Ray’s heart is to embrace the thing that threatens to divide them—a certain werewolf show with a certain actor who Ray admires. A simple kidnapping promises to do the trick, only fur (and fandom) fly when Alec’s romantic gesture leads to a very hairy situation. Can Alec prove to Ray how much their relationship means to him, or will his plans be ruined by the werewolf before Christmas?

While I ultimately enjoyed The Werewolf before Christmas, it took me four attempts to read it. As a rule, once I opt in to review a book, I don’t reread the blurb so that I can read the story without any expectations as it’s usually been a couple of week to a few months since I read the book’s blurb. In the case of this holiday short, it probably would have been better if I had reread the blurb because the first few pages of the story were a tad confusing as I didn’t realize that the main characters were supervillains.

That said, the fourth time was the charm at getting through the author’s setting of the scene and my making sense of who and what the characters were. And to clarify, it wasn’t the author’s writing that made it difficult to read because once I got past the first few pages, I plowed through the story. I wanted to see what dastardly plan Alec came up with. I enjoyed watching him carry out his plan and making the necessary adjustments to the plan when he learned previously unknown information about the target of his plot. I found his interactions with Ray to be sweet and his insecurity about not being good enough for Ray to be charming – even supervillains have doubts. I thought the ending was perfect, especially when Alec revealed the final bit that Ray didn’t know about. Even better was that Alec didn’t enforce the terms of his “win” because he’d been bitten by the werewolf-bug too. The Werewolf before Christmas was not the typical holiday romance, but it was certainly an entertaining read.

CHARLES PAYSEUR currently resides in the frozen reaches of Wisconsin, where his partner, a gaggle of pets, and more craft beer than is strictly healthy help him through the long winters. He works an incredibly boring day job so that his nights can be filled with spaceships, magic, and attractive men kissing (and maybe a bit more than kissing…). His work can also be found at Less Than Three Press, Lethe Press, Circlet Press, and in Lightspeed Magazine’s Queers Destroy Science Fiction!

New Game, Start by C.S. Poe – Stocking Stuffers

Reclusive medieval scholar, Edgar Royal, has a crush. On a guy. Not a big deal, except that said guy, Walter Chase, is a famous online gamer who has no idea Edgar even exists. Edgar has harbored these feelings for nearly a year, and when Walter announces on Twitter that he’ll be visiting New York City as a guest at the GamerOn convention, Edgar decides he’ll be one of the thousands of fans who responds to the message.

He definitely doesn’t expect to be singled out by the humble, gorgeous, out-and-proud heartthrob. And when it comes to dealing with people, Edgar’s skills are pretty nonexistent. Even with Walter giving all the right signals, Edgar lacks the courage do anything about the mutual attraction growing through their online courtship. He’s always been better with the written word, so maybe the perfect Christmas gift will say what he cannot. But if Edgar can’t get the present to Walter before the convention ends, he may miss out on the boyfriend of a lifetime.

C.S. Poe is a new-to-me author, and New Game, Start was the perfect introduction to get a feel for the author's writing style. This short story packed a punch, reading as a complete story, with a start/middle/finish, leaving me completely satisfied. Even though it didn't take me much time to read, I was fully immersed, time not even on my radar while inside the story.

The awkward, undateable Edgar is a fan of an online gamer celebrity. Walter has a gigantic following, and is as attractive as he is charismatic. Edgar is intimidated, but replies to a tweet about Walter visiting NYC for a gamer con, thinking it would get lost in the mix of other fans' replies.... not only does Walter tweet Edgar back, he private messages him too.

New Game, Start was sweet, cute, romantic, and awkwardly adorable. I'm a sucker for a gamer story, for geek stories, and for celebrity stories, so this hit all those notes for me. What I enjoyed the most was how so few pages packed so much, without any of the filler and unnecessary detailing larger novels use to draw it out for readers.

All payoff, no filler, for those of us without a lot of time on our hands wanting to be entertained by a full story. The author managed to fit the romance and sexy time in there too, without overpowering any other facet of the storytelling, and it was all tied up in a holiday bow.

Highly recommend, and I look forward to more by this author in the future.

Put on the spot, Jason makes the snap decision to take Mallory to see where he and her father spent their Christmases as kids. The last thing he expects is to run into Tommy, his ex—ex-best friend, ex-boyfriend—who is still living in town in town… and working as a sheriff’s deputy.

It’s hard to avoid someone in a small town—and maybe Jason doesn’t want to. He got Mallory a Christmas, and maybe now it’s time to get himself a Christmas boyfriend. But first, he owes Tommy some explanations.

Jason is trying to raise his niece, Mallory. He knows that nothing he does will bring her parents back, but he knows that she needs to have some normalcy. When he realizes that he’s forgotten the holiday, he panics a little and decides to take her back to where he and her father spent their holidays.

While they are driving to his hometown, he runs off the road and his ex-boyfriend, Tommy, comes to their rescue. Tommy is now the town sheriff and despite his reservations about Jason, he sees him in need of help and knows he can’t just walk away.

Mallory is somewhat surly, but she’s still grieving. You can’t help but laugh at some of her antics. She knows that her uncle is trying hard to give her a good holiday and she is appreciative, just not to his face.

Tommy is glad to see Jason again, but is still wary since they left on not such great terms. Jason is seeing now, leaving might have been good, but he also realizes what and who he left behind. There isn't too much romance in this story, but it's more friends finding each other again and seeing where it goes.

This was a sweet story about finding the holiday spirit, love, and acceptance. Each character has to find a new normal for them and then decide whether or not they will let others in.

TA MOORE genuinely believed that she was a Cabbage Patch Kid when she was a small child. This was the start of a lifelong attachment to the weird and fantastic. These days she lives in a market town on the Northern Irish coast and her friends have a rule that she can only send them three weird and disturbing links a month (although she still holds that a DIY penis bifurcation guide is interesting, not disturbing). She believes that adding ‘in space!’ to anything makes it at least 40% cooler, will try to pet pretty much any animal she meets (this includes snakes, excludes bugs), and once lied to her friend that she had climbed all the way up to Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, when actually she’d only gotten to the beach, realized it was really high, and chickened out.

She aspires to being a cynical misanthrope, but is unfortunately held back by a sunny disposition and an inability to be mean to strangers. If TA Moore is mean to you, that means you’re friends now.

I love romantic Christmas novellas, as they bring all the magic and excitement of Christmas to life with plenty of heartwarming passion.

I like the concept behind this story – in particular, the little touches which make the age difference seem much bigger. I was a bit confused by the 'group house' terminology as in the UK that would usually mean sheltered housing, or for the newly released from prison – but really is just a house share situation. And his housemates are a fun, intense, and friendly lot, who care a lot about their friend.

In my opinion, almost anything would be better than a golfing holiday – but Brad certainly has a much better option this year – Lucky him!

The Billionaire’s Boxing Day Bargain by Ava Hayden – Stocking Stuffers

Milo is too nice to say no when the desperate call goes out for more staff to work Boxing Day at Eden Consumer Electronics. It’s just until they sell the door-crasher specials, but it means he can’t see his billionaire boyfriend Lance until later that day.

Lance spends December 25 jetting back from a business trip, eager to see Milo. He calls as soon as his flight lands Boxing Day morning, only to find out that seven hundred and thirty televisions are cock-blocking him.

What’s the point of being a billionaire if you can’t spend your way around obstacles? Milo doesn’t want Lance solving his problems with cash, but he’ll never find out because Lance’s efficient personal assistant, William, is on the case. Unfortunately, even billionaires are subject to the law of unintended consequences—and these aren’t the kind Lance can buy his way out of.

Will Lance and Milo have their Boxing Day date? Or have Lance’s pushy billionaire ways finally gone too far?

First off, it’s nice to know that there’s a madness experienced by other countries equivalent to the US’s Black Friday sales – Boxing Day. Yep, based on a few of the scenes and memories in this story, Boxing Day shoppers can be just as driven and ruthless in their quest to snag the best bargains on their biggest shopping day of the year. And thanks to the well-intentioned machinations of Lance, Milo’s billionaire boyfriend, we are treated to a rather spectacular run on a poorly selling item as Lance flexes his financial muscle to get what he wants – to spend the day with Milo.

The Billionaire’s Boxing Day Bargain is a little cheesy in places, but I find that a good bit of Christmas-related stories are either cheesy or toothachingly sweet, but in a way I don’t mind in the least during the holidays. What I liked about Hayden’s novelette is that when Lance sets out to do what needs to be done so that he can spend the day with Milo, it’s not done in an entitled way, but rather as a man just wanting to spend time with his significant other. That Lance’s right-hand man was able to kill two birds with one stone had me smiling, even if things went awry. I really, really liked how Lance and Milo weren’t the only couple in the story to make an important decision about their future happiness together. And while I definitely enjoyed the ending, my favorite parts of the novelette were the recollections of how Lance and Milo met. I’m not sure why, but I found Lance’s persistent actions to be sweet and they still make me grin – even if the thought of a Boxing Day excursion makes me grimace.

Homemade from the Heart by Bru Baker – Stocking Stuffers

Craft store owner Grant has always been a sucker for a pretty face, and that goes double for a pretty face with an adorable sidekick. When seven-year-old Aubrey has her heart set on taking Grant’s already-full holiday craft series, he caves and gives up his one day off a week so she (and her hot guardian, Josh) can take private lessons. Their flirting ramps up week after week, and even though Josh isn’t with Aubrey’s mother, Grant can’t be sure the man isn’t straight. Maybe he’s just being friendly. And Josh, who most definitely is not straight, is afraid of being the creepy guy hitting on the teacher.

Frustrated by their stubbornness and cluelessness, Aubrey takes matters into her own hands. She decides the best gift to give Josh is something homemade and from the heart—a boyfriend they’ll both love.

I love romantic Christmas novellas, as they bring all the magic and excitement of Christmas to life with plenty of heartwarming passion.

This story builds over a number of weeks, and heats up so beautifully, almost innocently. Grant skirts around his attraction as he completely misunderstands the relationship between Aubrey and Josh, which is both cute and funny. I loved his inventiveness and the fun he had in the craft sessions. The culmination of the classes, and the last-minute mercy dash, all added to the fun that finally got him the guy.

Thank you, Ms. Baker, great story and it inspired me to go and do some crafty projects of my own!

BRU BAKER got her first taste of life as a writer at the tender age of four, when she started publishing a weekly newspaper for her family. What they called nosiness she called a nose for news, and no one was surprised when she ended up with degrees in journalism and political science and started a career in journalism.

Bru spent more than a decade writing for newspapers before making the jump to fiction. She now works in reference and readers’ advisory in a Midwestern library, though she still finds it hard to believe someone’s willing to pay her to talk about books all day. Most evenings you can find her curled up with a book or her laptop. Whether it’s creating her own characters or getting caught up in someone else’s, there’s no denying that Bru is happiest when she’s engrossed in a story. She and her husband have two children, which means a lot of her books get written from the sidelines of various sports practices.

Candy Canes and Cappuccinos by Elizabeth Coldwell – Stocking Stuffers

Kyle is struggling to run his coffee shop on his own after his partner walked out on him. He has his eye on Steven, who comes into the shop each day, but hasn’t worked up the nerve to express his interest. When Steven asks Kyle to help out with Christmas lunch at the homeless shelter where he works, Kyle is too exhausted to agree. He donates his tips but still feels he’s blown his chances with Steven and made himself look like a selfish jerk.

On Christmas Day, Kyle sees a way to make amends—to both Steven and the needy people depending on his kindness. It’s the right thing to do, and Kyle hopes he can clear up the misunderstanding and show Steven the type of man he really is. Maybe then they can consider some dessert when the lunch at the shelter is over…

Candy Canes and Cappuccinos is as sweet as its title suggests. Despite a bad year, Kyle remains optimistic in his outlook on life, both professionally in his thriving coffee shop and personally with the crush he has on one of his regulars, Steven. This is pretty obvious after his ex-boyfriend stops by to drop off some books and brag about his holiday plans with his new beau, who used to be Kyle’s best friend. Instead of letting this one-two punch get him down, he puts a smile on his face and keeps doing what he enjoys, serving coffee and his baked goods to customers. That is, until his favorite regular comes in and puts a real smile on his face. But when a much hoped for invite to spend time together comes in an unexpected form, Kyle turns down Steven’s invitation with a knee-jerk response and then feels guilty afterwards. When an unfortunate series of events gives Kyle the chance to, in his eyes, redeem himself to Steven, he wades right in to make Christmas better for some people who really need to know that good still exists in the world. And if Kyle gets his Christmas wish to spend some time with Steven, getting to know him better and whether or not there might be more to their flirtation, well that’s a beautiful way to cap off his year.

I found Candy Canes and Cappuccino to be a really cute holiday story. I liked how Kyle didn’t let the visit from his ex ruin his day, and how the visit from Steven brightened it almost immediately. I did find Kyle’s guilt about turning Steven down a little extreme given the circumstances, but that’s likely due to his religious upbringing he “mentions” in passing when thinking about his deceased parents. While the events that led to Kyle and Steven spending Christmas together were sad, the combined efforts of many were heartening and gave Kyle the chance for some sexy one-on-one time with Steven. I enjoyed Coldwell’s writing and thought the author did a lovely job with Kyle and Steven’s Christmas beginning.

Veronica☆☆☆☆
This is a sweet romance that tells the story of single dad Scott, who has very little family, and Brennan, who has a huge family but no man in his life. It is only a short story so there aren’t heaps of development, but the author still packs in a good bit of romance and a little dollop of heat. On a date they go to a Christmas fair and it really got me in the Christmas mood. So much so that I found a Christmas fair near me to attend.

My favourite thing about this story is that no big deal is made about the fact that Scott was once married to a woman and is now dating a man. I'm not sure this was because of the lack of time to explore it in a short story, or if it was intentional. I hope it was intentional because I loved it.

I love romantic Christmas novellas, as they bring all the magic and excitement of Christmas to life with plenty of heartwarming passion.

This is a very sweet story, with single dad Scott finding a man who clearly understands that his toddler Lexie has to come first. The instant attraction soon morphed to more, as Brennan makes all the right moves. The dog and daughter interactions are fun, the desire is mutual, and the outcome festively appropriate. Just what Christmas romances are all about!

Thank you, Ms. Veldura, for helping me slide happily into the festive season.
