Wishful Thinking by Helena Maeve

Three can be a fashionable number.

Waking up in bed with two men is not how model-turned-agent Jiya planned on mending her broken heart. One wild party and a pair of handsome strangers, and her previously entrenched principles seem thrown off-kilter. To make matters worse, one half of her extremely ill-considered one-night stand turns out to be none other than the very photographer she signed up months ago—with her ex-boyfriend’s help.

Stefon is both attractive and extremely good at what he does, an irresistible combination. Dating him should be enough—is enough—but Jiya’s quest to recover her missing phone soon has her revisiting both the scene of the party where they first met and its enigmatic but solitary host, Elijah.

Torn between two men, Jiya soon finds herself hurtling toward an impossible choice and a revelation that could change everything.

Jiya, Elijah, and Stefon are an interesting mix. I usually can jump right in to Maeve's stories and know exactly where I am, where it's going, and who is going with me. Like Jiya, I woke in this story, kind of dazed and confused.

This is a story about allowing yourself the ability to enjoy pleasure, but it also is a story about breaking preconceived notions – I think. Jiya knows that she shouldn't want to develop a relationship with Stefon, whom she has to work with on a regular basis. However, attraction is a hard thing to deny.

Then you have Elijah. He is kind of the unknown in this story – we know he and Stefon get along well and like to share their women.

For me, this had a lot of potential, but there was very little character development and even less character background. While I wanted to really like this short story, it just didn't deliver.

This is a very short, hot, and interestingly vague story. We understand a little about Jiya's career and principles, and what Stephon does, but Elijah is definitely a mystery. The chemistry, however, is clearly present and we get to wonder about just what might happen next... sometimes that question is very effective at keeping characters in one's mind long past finishing the last page.

For a quick, hot read, this would fit the bill.

Helena Maeve has always been globe trotter with a fondness for adventure, but only recently has she started putting to paper the many stories she's collected in her excursions. When she isn't writing erotic romance novels, she can usually be found in an airport or on a plane, furiously penning in her trusty little notebook.
