Gabriel by RJ Scott Blog Tour

Trapped in darkness, can an escort find a man to help him into the light?

Gabriel Reyes never gave in. He fought and was hurt, was abused but escaped with his life. He made his way in the world using the one thing he was good at: sex. He earned a place with a man who controls everything but Gabriel is safe; he’s made it.

Cameron Stafford hires Gabriel for a night, needing nothing more than a pretend boyfriend to get his dysfunctional family off his back. With the money he has in the bank and his own hotel, why won't they just leave him alone? It doesn’t matter that a degenerative disease has stolen his vision, or that his last boyfriend was a bastard who tried to steal from him; for now he has purpose.

When Gabriel and Cam fall for each other, can they find real happiness and, maybe, a forever that will save them both?

A new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

Please be aware: emotional and physical abuse are depicted on the page in this book.

Gabriel Reyes has had a hard life. His mother died when he was young, as a naive child he was taken advantage of and he thought he was saved. He was doing the only thing he thought he was good at... sex. He was doing whatever he had to to keep Stefan happy. In return, Stefan kept him doing bookings and safe, or so he thought.

After a "chance" meeting in Cameron's hotel elevator. Cameron Stafford hires Gabriel for one night to show his dysfunctional family that just because he is going blind, he isn't broken or a waste. After one night, Cam realizes that Gabriel is more than just a sex worker.

Can two broken men make it work? Especially when one believes he never deserves to be happy or loved.

I loved how this story, while involving Legacy Ranch, was more of Gabriel's journey to get there, than life on the ranch itself.

I can't wait to read what's next for Legacy Ranch.

Gabriel thinks he owes his life to his pimp/boyfriend Stefan, who saved him from the streets, even though Stefan is abusing him. Gabriel meets hotel owner Cam, when Cam hires him to be his date at a family function. Cam is sick of his family giving him a hard time for being single and treating him like he is incapable because he is blind.

The relationship between Gabriel and Cam develops as Cam deals with his family, who threaten to take away his business, and while Gabriel struggles to deal with the reality of his abuse with the help of Kyle and the Legacy Ranch.

At times I found the situation with Cam's family to be a little contrived. Overall though, this is a good story and I enjoyed watching our heroes struggle and push past the difficulties in their lives to find love.

This is another gritty and dramatic addition to the Legacy series. Wealthy Cameron meets Gabriel when he hires him as an escort for a family event. Cam’s controlling and manipulative family provides the drama for this story while Gabriel’s inability to escape from a life of prostitution and domestic abuse provides the grit.

Cam seems almost as trapped and lonely as Gabriel at the start of this story. Even though he is wealthy and successful, his blindness keeps him separate and he has to fight his manipulative and controlling family to retain his independence. As much as Cam attempts to save Gabriel, I loved the way that Gabriel also made Cam stronger.

If Cameron has always been privileged, Gabriel hasn’t known anything except cruelty and hardship. In comparison to things he has experienced in the past, prostitution and a boyfriend/pimp who only sometimes hurts him doesn’t seem too bad. Gabriel continued to surprise me in this story. As Cam’s escort, he is smooth, confident, and perceptive. Later, we see him fearful and broken and we also see him as strong and defiant.

Cam and Gabriel don’t spend a whole lot of time together in this story. Theirs is a relatively low heat story and the most romantic moments are those stolen from Cam’s glamourous high pressure life and Gabriel’s grim reality when the men spend time doing ordinary things together. The connection between Cam and Gabriel is sweet and they are gentle with each other. I’m glad that most of the ‘saving’ of Gabriel is done by other characters because it allows Cam and Gabriel to remain equals and to work as partners.

The Legacy series is a spinoff of the Texas series, further expanding the soap opera style world of Riley and Jack Campbell-Hayes with a little more grit than the original series. I think I’ve read most of the previous books but there were still several references to names and events that I struggled to recollect. This book might be able to stand alone but I think readers should at least start at the beginning of the Legacy books.

This is a truly remarkable and special book – but definitely not an easy read. Gabriel is a man who has suffered a lot, and is still in the grips of a manipulative handler. Getting inside his head is an emotional experience; both incredibly moving and painful. Be prepared to try and persuade him to behave differently, again and again.

We also have the chance to put ourselves in Cam's shoes, as he deals with his physical limitations and, much more significantly, navigates his way through the restrictions forced upon him by his family. Somehow, he and Gabe forge an unexpected connection, which leads to an amazing love story.

There are some important characters who also make contributions to the richness of this story – Six being an obvious example (and I love how it is quietly slipped in that he too changes by the end of the story). Gabriel's understanding of Sophie's situation and prompting Cam to act is a lovely thread too.

Be sure to have plenty of tissues to hand, because this is certainly a book which will bring tears to the eye (for both sad and joyful reasons). And whilst I would recommend that you read Kyle first, so that you have some of the background of Legacy and Gabriel's links with it, you could start here and then go back and read Kyle.

Thank you, Ms. Scott, for an intense, life affirming, and deeply romantic story.
