Okay, so let me start by saying that if you're squeamish, don't read this. There are a lot of questionable parts where you feel icky. There is a horrible abuser within this story – however, Godwin writes him so vicious and well, that you can't help but appreciate Godwin's writing.

Charlee is on the run. She's on the run because she was sold to a horrible man and has finally found a way out. Despite her being abused horribly, both physically and emotionally, for years, she is a strong woman. She lives her life despite the fear, and finds happiness where she can. Not only is she in love with a great guy, she's starting to feel somewhat safe. However, that's when she also meets Jay. She and Jay have this instant connection – both are somewhat broken souls who are just trying to survive.

Jay is a struggling musician who can't stand to be touched. He survived a horrific bout of abuse in his younger years and simply cannot get past it. Despite that, he decides on a whim to get his scars covered and walks into Charlee's tattoo shop. His surly attitude doesn't deter Charlee at all – rather, she is more intrigued. Jay walks out with what he's asked for – at least he thinks so.

Despite Charlee's careful planning, she falls back into the hands of Roy Oxford – the horrible abuser she was sold to. When she is able to escape again, she seeks Jay out because she wants to know whether or not he liked his tattoo. By this time, several years have passed and Jay is no longer recognizable. He's addicted to anything and everything – his band mates just handle him, but know that he's hanging on by a thread.

Charlee and Jay have instant connection again and both are able to help each other through their unspeakable trauma. The secondary characters just make the story that much more entertaining. The emotion in this story – the hurt, desperation, love, and anger – are all well written. You can feel those emotions jump off the page.

I really enjoyed this story because to me, it was about hope. Both Jay and Charlee had to have faith – they had to believe in each other, themselves, and their family to survive. So, if you can get past the abuse, then I think you will like the message.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Pam Godwin, lives in the Midwest with her husband, their two children, and a foulmouthed parrot. When she ran away, she traveled fourteen countries across five continents, attended three universities, and married the vocalist of her favorite rock band.

Java, tobacco, and dark romance novels are her favorite indulgences, and might be considered more unhealthy than her aversion to sleeping, eating meat, and dolls with blinking eyes.
