Bearly in Control by Milly Taiden

For vet and animal whisperer Charli Avers, talking to bears is all in a day’s work. But when she finds a man—a very sexy, very alpha man—where a bear ought to be, the wild comes close to home. Charli is drawn to this mysterious stranger. She wants to help him piece together the past he can’t remember—even if that means shedding her human misgivings and embracing her more carnal desires.

After shifting from bear to man, Barry believes he’s finally found his mate. Now he just needs to find himself. He doesn’t know much about the animal within him, but his human heart aches for Charli. She ignites his instincts to protect her from all danger—including their electric attraction.

The stakes climb as Charli investigates the mystery behind Barry’s memory loss and how it may relate to strange sightings and thefts in this little corner of Oregon. Without answers, she may lose Barry—and herself—to the wild side forever.

Jordan☆☆☆
This is my first time reading any of Milly Taiden's books, which did not leave me very impressed. I just could not get into Bearly in Control and it left me pretty uninterested in checking out any of the future books in the Shifter Undercover series. This story seemed to just drag on for me and then it just seemed to end. It just felt like so many things were left unsolved and the pieces that were solved, seemed way too obvious for an investigator. Also, it really rankled my Oregon pride because I hate when people have all these misconceived notions of what Oregon is like. Normally, I'm always so charmed to read about a book that takes place in a place I've lived, but this one just left me wishing she would've chosen some other state to set her story in.

Charli is the local vet in a small town in Oregon and basically Dr. Doolittle, which means she was born with the ability to speak to animals. One day while working, she brings home a bear who happens to turn into a man named Barry, a bear shifter, that wakes up with no memory in Charli's barn. Together, Charli and Barry begin to investigate the mystery surrounding Barry's memory loss and the strange thefts happening around the town.

I didn't hate Bearly in Control, but I also don't see myself picking up book #2. I definitely felt like Charli and Barry had some good moments, but it wasn't enough to keep me intrigued in the story and the multiple storylines often left me slightly confused. All in all, I'd give this book three stars.

Avid Reader☆☆☆
This was my first book by Milly Taiden. While I didn't love the story and actually found it to be very frustrating, I don't know whether it's because this particular story just wasn't Taiden's cup of tea or if it is simply all of Taiden's books.

This was a painfully slow story. There was SO much dialogue and sometimes, less is more. This would have had a much easier flow on the reader if there had been less talking, less description, just less in general.

Nothing was resolved in the story with the exception of Barry knowing what he is. Despite knowing that there will be more books to follow, I find myself uninterested in Barry himself and more interested in the secondary characters. What makes them tick? Why are they like they are?

Charli was fun and spunky in the beginning, but once she met up with Barry, she turned into a hormonal teenager with no impulse control. We lost the confident, sexy heroine to a giddy, giggly teenage girl who dumbed down considerably.

Overall, this was not a great read for me. I like shifter stories, but this one was just too slow.

Milly Taiden is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of numerous series, including the Sassy Mates books and the Federal Paranormal Unit novels. Milly loves writing sexy stories so hot they sizzle your e-reader. When her curvy humans meet their furry alphas, inhibitions give way to animal instincts—and carnal desire. She lives in Florida with her husband, child, and Needy Speedy, their spunky dog. Milly is addicted to shoes, Dunkin’ Donuts, and chocolate and is aware she’s bossy.
