Master Cleary's Boys by Brina Brady Blog Tour

Desperate to escape the clutches of an increasingly sadistic and abusive Dom, Kevin and Jack seize their opportunity to escape and runaway to Galway. They shave their heads and do their best to avoid being detected while searching for a new Dom who is prepared to take them on as package deal. Their running leads them to Cleary's Pub—a bar full of leather-clad Doms and subs, owned and run by Master Cleary...

Master Cameron Cleary was in need of a new sub—it had been far too long since he'd had a boy in his life. Each night as he ran his pub filled with leather-clad Doms, accompanied by their Subs, he became more aware of how solitary his life had become. That is, until two young cousins turned up one night looking for work, a place to stay, and more intriguingly a Dom who would take them both. Something about their recently shaved heads and skittish demeanor stirred his interest and protective nature. But did he want two subs, and was he prepared to deal with whatever trouble these boys were hiding?

M/M/M Dom/sub
Triggers: Abuse

Jack and Kevin have been together since they were young. Both are subs, but on occasion, when it's necessary, Kevin will provide Jack with dominance. They were unfortunate enough to come under the "protection" of their Sir. When Sir asks them to do things that are illegal, both decide that they need to run.

This has great aspects of both abusive BDSM and conventional BDSM/domestic discipline. When you compare where the boys came from, where they are heading, and how they ultimately achieve their end goal, the journey is a long one.

Master Cleary is a Dom who doesn't really know if he wants two subs, but once he sees Jack and Kevin, he knows that he can't just let them fall back in with their horrible, abusive Sir. Brycen Higgins is not a true Dom. Instead, he acts like he is in order to have a clan of boys who will do his bidding.

When someone from Master Cleary's past comes back and creates waves, Jack, Kevin and Master Cleary must decide if they are going to fight for their relationship or run again.

This was well thought out, the relationship aspect was easy to follow, and despite me not feeling a ton of chemistry, their relationship just worked for this story.

I struggled with this story. Set in contemporary Ireland, it sounds American and it feels slightly outdated. I found the writing very choppy at the beginning and found it difficult to get into the story.

I’m hesitant to write a negative review because some of my reservations are personal. I have to admit that there are elements of total power exchange relationships that I struggle with and I really don’t enjoy reading BDSM where adult characters are infantilised. For anyone else who shares my preferences, this is definitely a story where the boys (Jack especially but also Kevin to some extent) are treated as children and they read as children. I’m still not sure whether Jack was supposed to have special needs or if he just desperately needed a Daddy figure to control his life. Either way, I didn’t find Jack’s slow, needy helplessness at all attractive. Kevin came across as slightly more competent, but I found him completely forgettable.

Master Cleary should have been an interesting character but I don’t think he is ever fully described to readers. He is only addressed by his name a few times in the story. Readers are privy to his thoughts about his boys but we aren’t provided with much about him beyond his role as master. It is difficult to care for a character who doesn’t feel real and I was never able to fully imagine Master Cleary.

I know this is fluffy, smutty BDSM ménage so I have to hold back from my temptation to keep analysing the text. While serious BDSM writing prompts reflection and challenges relationship norms and boundaries, this really isn’t that kind of story. There is very light kink here and there are a few very sexy scenes. There are elements of suspense woven into this book and I enjoyed the exciting ending.

Again, I’m not sure how much of my reaction is down to my discomfort with the Daddy/slave style relationship between Master Cleary, Kevin and Jack. I’d recommend that readers download samples and make up their own minds about this story.

I didn’t read the first book in the series but I didn’t think I was missing anything vital to the story line. I really wanted to like this book, I just couldn’t connect with any of the characters, and at times, Kevin and Jack seemed so childlike that I just couldn’t get into the story. I also didn’t like how Master Cleary handled things with his ex. This book just didn’t work for me, but I am sure others will enjoy it.
