Loving Deep by Tracey Devlyn

A rugged mountain man falls for his beautiful neighbor, the one person who can save his beloved red wolves and whose business depends on their destruction.

Britt Steele is on a mission to protect endangered red wolves in the mountains of North Carolina. But when the wolves' territory is threatened, he clashes with the new landowner, a woman who's capturing his heart even as she plans to sell that precious land to the highest bidder.

Miranda Shepherd's quirky bar is her passion, but money's flowing out faster than she can pour a drink. An outsider's bid to purchase the land she's long called home will save her business. Only one man stands in Randi's way--a dangerously handsome and persuasive man who poses equally dangerous questions that rock her whole world.

An unscrupulous trophy hunter wants the game-rich property and he'll stop at nothing to get his hands on the wolves' haven and another trophy for his collection. When members of the pack begin disappearing, Britt and Randi must join forces to protect the wolves and save the love of a lifetime.

This book was somewhat hard for me. Randy is a city girl who left the country when her mother dedicated more of her life to conservation than to her family. There are unanswered questions regarding Randy's issues with her mother throughout the book.

Then you have Britt. He's kind of gruff around the edges, but he has a large heart. When he realizes that the red wolves that he has been protecting might be hunted to extinction, he will stop at almost nothing to protect them.

The tension between Britt and Randy begins when Randy's mom dies – she was supposed to will the land that the red wolves were inhabiting to Britt. Because of the financial pickle that Randy finds herself in – she starts to entertain other bids... what she realizes is that someone wants her land and will stop at almost nothing to obtain it.

The wolves are what really hold this story together, but the Steele family is also fun to watch too. They pull together and fight the good fight.

I had a difficult time with how Britt treated Randy throughout the story – I thought he was cold and callous – she seemed mostly convenient to him and not like he truly cared. Their relationship seemed very superficial – there was very little chemistry between the two, besides annoyance.

Overall, this was just an okay story. It had a lot of potential, but for me, just fell a little flat.
