My Addiction by Cassie Ryan

In a novel of erotic passion and deep commitment from the author of My Obsession, an undercover cop finds a soulmate who surrenders to his healing touch.

Fiercely independent and determined to free herself from her father’s manipulation, tech expert Kate Fretwell finds a refuge in L.A.’s elite BDSM dungeon scene as the hot new thing to political and Hollywood A-listers. Still, all that glitters gets old, and Kate soon tires of the stream of well-heeled masters who expect her to be at their beck and call. Then she meets a very different kind of Dom—one whose quiet confidence, strength, and command bring her most willingly to her knees.

Undercover FBI agent Dex Alexander fits right into his assignment to expose terrorist links to one of L.A.’s most popular clubs. The case has reawakened a desire to find the perfect companion, and he knows that beautiful, vulnerable Kate is a woman he could love. But when her father’s corruption unwittingly makes Kate the target of a bigger enemy, Dex brings her to his Phoenix home—and his dungeon, Club Desire. Here she shows him just how eager she is to give him everything... and more.

I didn’t read the previous book in the series. I liked this book, the suspense wasn’t very heavy and was easy to figure out. The BDSM aspect to the book was good, it showed good knowledge of the subject. I enjoyed the characters and the erotic aspects to the story. The sex was good too :)

Characters: Well written and easy to relate to
Sex: Yes
Religious: No
Would I recommend to others: Yes
More than one book in the series: Yes
Genre: BDSM
Would I read more by this author: Yes

The romantic suspense in this story is more carefully developed than it was in the first book. I loved the morally ambiguous characters. Even Kate remains a suspect to the end of the story. There is more excitement from the start in this book than the first. A series of murders, a grisly car accident – this was an exciting story. Dex’s FBI role takes center stage and I enjoyed seeing him work in his professional capacity as well as working as a Dom.

My problem with both Kate and Dex is that they are both a little too perfect. Both beautiful. Both professionally talented. Kate is rich. Dex is respected in the FBI and the BDSM community. The chemistry between them is hot, but perfect characters aren’t ever truly loveable. I wanted an edge or a flaw in each of them to make them truly human. Even a sense of humour would have helped.

My biggest complaint about this book is that once again, a professional Dom and an experienced sub meet, fall in love, and immediately eschew the lifestyle for white picket fence monogamy. Really? Maybe the traditional happily ever after will help the book appeal to a wider vanilla audience, but it doesn’t really ring true for a couple deeply enmeshed in the BDSM lifestyle. Once again, this seems more about titillating romance readers excited by 50 Shades than actually exploring characters who honestly enjoy the BDSM lifestyles.

So – the suspense element of this story is more exciting than the sex or the BDSM scenes. It works better as a romantic suspense than as a BDSM story and I struggled to warm to either of the main characters.

This is the second in the series, following on from My Obsession, which is based at Dex's home club. My Addiction is a good mix of romance, BDSM, and political intrigue. It is well set up and gives a satisfying outcome, both to the FBI investigation and definitely to the clear attraction between Dex and Kate.

I really liked the way that revealing the problems of the Dungeon's etiquette were woven into the story. It would have been easy to list them, but instead by revealing the issues as we get into the story, they pile up and give us a clear picture of just what might be happening. Then there are a couple of twists, which work well, as the average reader may have started to think they have worked out the mystery. The chemistry between Dex and Kate worked really well, even if they were both reluctant to commit to more than play time.

I have to say that while I really enjoyed the first story in this series, I didn't care for this one as much. There was a lot of mystery and suspense and that's what saved the story for me. The rest of it was insta-love and predictable, so I didn't care too much for it. I have to say that while we see a lot of BDSM going on, the actual couple is only in one or two scenes and it feels like once they are together, the so desperately needed BDSM aspects that were present in the beginning are no longer needed or wanted.

However, I think that I would read the next book in the series since the story and writing was pretty good and the sex was hot.
