Into the Nothing by BT Urruela Blog Tour

Xander Evans has been on the road for many years. Never settling. Always moving from one place to another, unable to let go of his past. He lived a tragic childhood, spending most of those years in foster care. He's never felt like he's had a home. That is until he stops in the small town of Truman Valley, Missouri, where he meets a woman who will change everything he's ever known.

Paige Watson has it all. A loving family, beautiful home, and a great career. The only thing she's missing....is love. After escaping an abusive relationship, she opens her heart up to a stranger. He is unlike any man she's ever met. He came into her life and turned it completely upside down. Everything is perfect. That is, until one fateful night.

A night that would tear the Watson family apart, never to be put back together again.

A night that would send Xander away to prison for life.

"How about twenty questions?" I ask.

"I hate twenty questions."

"How about five questions, then?"

He cracks a smile and lifts an eyebrow. "How about three?"

"Deal!"

"So, have I mentioned how much I fucking hate Tuesdays?" Brandi's voice cuts right between us. Xander looks relieved.

Me? Not so much. "Damn it, Brandi!"

"What?"

"Oh nothing. Can you grab me Fireball though? Pretty please. Two of them." I look at Xander. "You're taking one."

"Three. I am too, bitch! Fuck Tuesdays!" Brandi calls out from across the bar as she begins filling the shot glasses from the Fireball chiller.

"Question one. You said you’ve been traveling for a while now, right? Do you ever get tired of it? Ever feel like settling?”

"Damn. Starting out with the heavy hitters, huh?" He eyes the shot glasses as if hoping it will somehow make them fill faster.

"Need me to go easier on you? Maybe a finger or two first before I go in with the whole fist?"

He looks at me in disbelief. "Did you really just say that?"

"Just answer the question, two fingers or three?"

First I would like to say, "Thank You for Your Service B.T. Urruela!"

Now on to my review. The story starts with Xander in prison for a crime he didn't commit, or so he says, he says he was set up. Then we go back a few months to the beginning, where Xander meets the Watson family and their story begins. The Watsons own a winery in Missouri and while Xander is passing through Truman Valley and at a bar, he notices a woman walk in with an older man. Shortly after, a very drunk man starts pawing at her and Xander does the only thing he knows, protects the woman. When the older man introduces himself, he is Jack Watson and soon offers Xander a job for a few months at the winery. Which is good with Xander, he could use some cash. Xander is a drifter and he is headed to Washington to see his sister, who he hasn't seen in over 20 years, so what is a few more months.

Paige is drawn to Xander even though she knows nothing about him. She wants to learn it all though. With a rotten ex who was into drugs and beating her, she needs a stable, caring, and protective man in her life. She thinks she might find that in Xander.

Why does Paige downplay the things her ex does with the drugs, beatings, and bullying? Will Xander realize what his drinking will cause? After Paige's mother is murdered and Xander is blamed, will Paige ever believe that he could never do that?

I found this story good at times and sometimes, not very often, it seemed to drag. And why was Paige on Xander about his drinking when she and her whole family were drinkers? I understand the thing about drinking and driving, but still.

This is a first for me from B.T. Urruela and I can't wait to read more from him.

3.5 Stars
Don't let my 3.5 stars lead you to believe I didn't like Into the Nothing. Did I love it? No, but I did enjoy reading it. It was suspenseful and not your typical romance story.

The prologue captures your interest from the first paragraph. Xander Evans finds himself in prison for a murder he didn't commit. He knows he was set up, but pleads guilty anyway. Paige is just out of a relationship, and finds Xander's straightforward attitude intriguing. There is an instant connection between them.

I was totally hooked into the plot line, but then it lost me somewhere. I found Xander interesting, but something was missing for me. I loved the suspense aspect of the story line and appreciated the non-traditional ending. I am interested in seeing what comes next.
