Blunder. Gaffe. Misstep. Error. Snafu. Although plenty of words described the huge, life-altering mistake Nick Priest had made, none of them quite conveyed his stupidity. He’d had a chance with Teagan O’Brien, but he’d blown it. That was his biggest regret, and he had a lot of them.

As he stared at her across the ballroom, he had to remind himself to breathe. Her long, red dress clung to her curvy body, just tight enough to make every man in the room wish his pants were a little looser behind the zipper.

She reminded him of a starlet from the 1950s with her abundant breasts, narrow waist, and round hips. He’d had the pleasure of shaping those hips with his hands, tonguing her rosy nipples, and sinking into her luscious body, although pleasure didn’t really describe what he’d felt when he had been with her.

She laughed, her deep blue eyes glinting in the light from the chandeliers, and her date leaned closer, licking his lips as he got an eyeful of her tits. Nick clenched his hands into fists, barely controlling the urge to ram the fucker’s head into the wall.

For more than a year and a half, he had been trying to persuade Teagan to give him another chance. But she hated him with all the passion she’d given him during their one and only night together.

He thought about approaching her but discarded the idea. She had become a master at avoiding him, and she would find a reason to excuse herself immediately.

Forcing himself to relax, he settled more comfortably against the wood-paneled wall. He wasn’t trying to blend in. He knew that was impossible.

His face and form were highly recognizable from years of playing pro football, and most recently, appearing in commercials for Riley O’Brien & Co., the nation’s oldest designer and manufacturer of blue jeans. Since he’d thrown his lot in with the company, he had figured he ought to attend the annual holiday party. Plus, he had known Teagan would be here.

This wasn’t the first O’Brien celebration he had attended. He’d known the family for about fifteen years. He had played football with Quinn O’Brien at the University of Southern California, and he had formed friendships with both Quinn and his younger brother, Cal.

The O’Brien brothers were Nick’s best friends, two of his favorite people. But his absolute favorite person was their little sister, Teagan. He’d known her almost as long as he had known Quinn and Cal, and before he’d messed things up, they had been friends. Best friends, in fact.

This is the second book in this series and I didn't read the first book but I didn't feel lost at all.

I really enjoyed this book and the way the author gave you a chance to get to know the characters instead of the insta-love I've seen a lot of.

Teagan is the younger sister of Cal and Quinn O'Brien and has been in love/lust with Quinn's best friend Nick for years. She's made a study of Nick, his quiet demeanor, active listening and one word answers.

Nick has a serious stutter and he lacks the self-confidence to speak in front of people. Only a few people know of his stuttering because he rarely gives more than one word answers. It’s a habit developed over time due to his father's constant derogatory remarks about Nick's inability to speak clearly. His father sees the disability a hindrance and lack of intelligence, something that his father can't stand. As a world renown economist, he doesn't want to be seen as the father of a child who is less than perfect.

Nick and Teagan's love affair takes a long and winding road. Moving from Nick being friends of her brothers to being Teagan's friend, to wanting more than just friendship.

Nick's emotional baggage about his stuttering leaves him wanting to say more, but is afraid to see the disgust or disappointment in Teagan's face when she learns that he is less. Teagan just wants to be loved, and loved by Nick. She has a few self-esteem issues herself that make her believe that Nick would never want her. She's not the bright and shiny "gorgeous" of her parents or brothers, but instead inherited the curvy figure of her grandmother.

To me, this book has two parts. “Right now in San Francisco” and “Several years ago in Boston.”

In starts out in present day, then flashback to Boston where we see Nick and Teagan really get to know each other. In present day, we learn more about the people Nick and Teagan have become without each other after the events that took place in Boston.

Having read All the Right Places, I was excited to get to read Coming Apart at the Seams. I was not only hopeful that I would enjoy the author’s writing style just as much while she focused on another of the O’Brien siblings, but I wanted to know what was up between Teagan and Nick, because that kiss … oh, that kiss, left me wanting more. While you can absolutely read book two without having read book one first, I really recommend that you read them in order because the O’Brien family is a close-knit family and you’ll have an even better feel for the relationships between them.

Teagan and Nick’s story is told in two parts. After a brief look at where they currently are and learning that Nick wants Teagan back in his life, we jump to the past to see what happened that ended their friendship and just why she claims to hate him. Having just been traded to Boston, Nick finds himself in a town where he knows no one, until Quinn reminds him that Teagan is there for school. Starving for something familiar, he jumps at the chance to hang out with the little sister of his best friend, someone who he also counts as a friend. It doesn’t hurt any that she knows about his stutter, so he doesn’t have to worry as much when talking to her. That’s right, our beautiful golden boy stutters, badly, and because of it, he avoids talking as much as possible around unknown people. While this has given him a reputation for being a bit rude, he’s managed to keep it a secret from the public. But the chance to hang out with someone he knows and not have to worry about it, is a balm to Nick’s soul. That is, until he begins to have less than brotherly feelings for his best friends’ little sister – feelings which are in direct violation of the bro-code and would get his butt kicked six ways to Sunday if he acted on them. But the fact that Teagan is so easy to be around and so much fun to spend time with means that Nick is only able to avoid seeing her for so long. Fortunately for him, Nick didn’t have access to Teagan’s thoughts like the reader does because had he had even an inkling about her feelings toward him, that powder keg would have exploded long before it did. And when it finally did, when Teagan and Nick crossed that line, their night together was sexy as heck, but the aftermath was beyond messy. Once we see how their “break up” plays out, and it is hard to watch because we have access to both characters’ thoughts, we jump back to the present. A present where Nick is determined to win Teagan back. A present where Nick has a job at Riley O'Brien & Co. that puts him in close contact to Teagan. A present where Teagan is determined not to be seduced by Nick or risk her heart with him again. A present where the past is not fully known to Nick, leaving him at a loss for why Teagan reacts to certain things the way she does. A present where the ghosts of the past are so huge, there may not be a future for them.

The past-present format in Coming Apart at the Seams really worked for the telling of Teagan and Nick’s story. I enjoyed watching the friendship between the two grow, watching it become more, watching them fight their feelings for one another. While my heart broke for both of them when their friendship imploded, I think their story had to unfold the way it did to make Teagan’s actions in the present make sense. The chemistry between the two is intense and this made for some smoking hot sex scenes. As much as enjoyed those, it was the emotional scenes, the revelations, that really moved me in this installment. The secrets that destroyed their friendship years earlier helped to soothe old wounds once they were finally revealed and gave them a much needed second chance at love. As a fan of the series, I also liked that I got to catch up with Quinn and Amelia and the rest of the O’Brien family. I loved Coming Apart at the Seams and am so looking forward to the next installment in the Riley O'Brien & Co. series.
