Treble Maker by Annabeth Albert

On Perfect Harmony, the ambitious competitors heat things up on stage and off…

Cody Rivers is determined to be a rock star, but couch-surfing between bar shows gets old fast. Joining an a cappella group for a new singing competition show could be his last chance at real fame—unless the college boy from the heart of the country messes it up for him. Lucas Norwood is everything gothy, glittery Cody is not—conservative, clean-cut, and virginal. But when a twist in the show forces them together, even the sweetest songs get steamy as the attraction between them lights up the stage. Lucas wants to take it slow, but Cody’s singing a different tune—and this time it maybe a love song…

I was surprised by Treble Maker. I am a fan of Ms. Albert's work but this one was a little different then her normal work. I loved the premise American Idol, Pitch Perfect aspect of the story. I enjoyed the opposites attract aspect. Cody has the wilder, sleeps around, comfortable in his skin, openly flamboyant twink thing about him. Lucas on the other hand is a backward, admittedly gay, virginal, clumsy, country boy.

There was a lot of back and forth between Lucas and Cody. It worked in the beginning and then it became boring and repetitious. Lucas is saving himself but then he isn't. Lucas gives into Cody and a hot and steamy mutual masturbation scene happens.

I did enjoy the two POVs to see into Lucas's head for his reasoning why he was like he was and his parental influences. I really fell into the last 25% or so. It was written well and finally the back and forth was over.

It wasn't my favorite read from Ms. Albert but I didn't hate it. It fell somewhere in the middle of the road, which it why I gave 3 stars.

Cody and Lucas are at opposite ends of the personality spectrum. Cody is sexy goth, confident and totally wrapped up in his quest for stardom. Lucas is quiet, sexually repressed and struggling to live up to the weight of his parents' expectations.

This story had more angst drama that I usually like in an m/m story but I was sucked in and kept turning the pages. I could say it was because I was enjoying reading about Lucas having the courage to be his own man and go after what he wants against the wishes of his parents. I could say it was because I enjoyed watching Cody realise there is more to life than his career. However I'd be lying. Mostly I loved seeing Cody corrupting Lucas in the bedroom and making their kinky dreams come to life. These two are hot! But there is plenty of story to devour too. Treble Maker is a drama filled, hot romance and I really enjoyed it.

I have to admit that in the beginning I wasn't sure this was going to be for me – but there was enough there that I kept going – and I was pleased that I did, as this got better and better.

There is a really interesting twist in this story as one very experienced (but somewhat closeted) guy falls for one who although out, is on a pledge to wait until he marries a husband. The pressures of the competition, the pressures from his family and peers is nothing when faced with Cody ... and we get to watch everything unravel and reform ... Somehow it worked, after a rocky start. Cody definitely knows how to get under Lucas's skin, as you will find out.

Now I am looking forward to what happens next!

I really found myself sucked into this book from the get go. Cody nabbed me from the beginning of his tale with his skinny jeans and guyliner and he kept me interested until the end. While I think it may have had a bit of filler that could have been discarded mid-book the storyline did keep me interested. I found Cody believable and endearing as an out gay male in the L.A. music scene. I felt for his strife to get where he was and his dreams to make it big in the music world. He joins a new reality TV show that is American Idol for A Cappella groups (think American Idol meets Glee) and hopes this is his big break. Lucas comes from a very conservative college and his A Cappella group the M&Ms are sweater vest wearing traditionalist. And while out with being gay, Lucas has signed an oath to be celibate. Cody is everything that flips Lucas' switch and the struggle to keep his, wait for marriage, vow to his parents and college becomes harder and harder the better he gets to know Cody. Cody is open & honest about who he is and what he wants and he's not sure he has time for a celibate virgin but Lucas is too much temptation to leave alone.

I enjoyed the premise of the Idol/Glee reality show and the interaction of the groups in this story. I found Lucas and Cody to have incredible spark and attraction! I loved the storyline of Cody introducing Lucas to the openly out world Lucas has been hiding from and the budding relationship they were forging. Great Read!
