End of Day by Jewel E. Ann Blog Tour

Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in the sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life.

Four caskets. Two bodies.

Jessica and Jude Day witness their funeral and that of their parents a few yards away from mourning family and friends. Stripped of the only life they’ve ever known, the Days say goodbye to San Francisco forever.

Six months later, two thirty-year-old misfits with elite self-defense skills and penchants for alcohol, sex, and trouble arrive like an earthquake to Peaceful Woods, a retirement community in Omaha, Nebraska, that thrives on rules and gossip. Welcome home, Jackson and Jillian Knight.

Jackson celebrates his new beginning by embracing his job and wiping his cavalier past clean with a temporary oath of celibacy. But Jillian’s past is branded into her soul—the deaths, the insanity, Dr. Luke Jones, and the need to make her lovers bleed. Her chance for redemption comes in the form of a next door neighbor, one Senior Master Sergeant Monaghan. He’s sexy, dangerously alluring, and riddled with emotional issues from years of service. He’s also … So. Damn. Grumpy.

Their mission is simple: Let go, start over, don't kill anyone, and pray that nobody wakes the dead.

“Have you ever killed anyone?”

Jessica’s smile slipped. “If I told you then I’d have to kill you.”

“So you’re a secret agent?”

She flipped onto her stomach, resting her chin on her crossed arms. “If I said yes then it would no longer be a secret. Come on, Jones, you’re losing your focus. Don’t let me feel smarter than you or our time together will be over and I rather like hanging out here.”

“Luke,” he corrected.

“Lucas.”

“Luke.”

“Lukey.”

“LUKE!”

“Lulu.”

“I mean it!” Luke showed another rare moment of teetering emotion.

Jessica chuckled. “What are the chances of us having sex? I’ve never done it missionary, but you could possibly counsel me through it.”

He refocused on his crossword puzzle, filling in a word in pen. “Less than zero percent.”

“So, not in my favor, eh?

“Why not missionary?”

Jessica smiled in delight that Luke continued with the topic of conversation. “I’m sure you already know, but if you want me to say I need control, then sure, I need control. But the truth is I’d control any sex position you want to put me in.” Jessica winked as Luke gave her a fleeting glance. “I just don’t want you thinking you have control, even if I know it’s not the case. Pisses me off to see the smirk on a guy’s face when he thinks he has control.”

“Tell me why you need control.” Luke continued with his crossword.

“In bed?”

“Yes.”

“Someone has to have it.”

“Why?”

“Because someone initiates it.”

“So if I initiate sex with you will I have control?”

“There’s only one way to find out.” Jessica wiggled her eyebrows at an ill-humored Luke.

Did you know that pleading "no, no, no, no, no, no, no" at the end of the book does not help you avoid getting shoved off a cliff by an author? I did, but it didn't stop the words from flying out of my mouth when I hit the last page of End of Day. Keep in mind that when I first signed up to review the book I had no idea that it was the first installment in a series. But that knowledge wouldn't have stopped me from signing up to review it nor would knowing there was a cliffhanger as I pretty much accept that a cliffhanger is highly probably when a book is part of a series. Why would I have tread forth despite knowing that a cliff was in my imminent future? Because after reading Idle Bloom, I fell in love with Ms. Ann’s writing and Only Trick sealed the deal, so I jumped at the chance to review End of Day. And I am so very glad that I did because I loved this book and cannot wait for its sequel.

Both of the previous books of Ms. Ann's that I've read featured broken characters. While it's true that Jillian and Sarge have bloodied posts, broken is far too mild of a term for them. Sarge (AJ) is career military but is now in an advisory role after having been diagnosed with PTSD. At first glance, his refusal to accept the diagnosis seems like a case of machismo, but as the story progresses it’s revealed that AJ refuses to accept the label because he sees it as an excuse for his behavior and he engages in some pretty horrific behavior. Sarge is not looking for absolution or acceptance and yet he may find just that in Jillian because she might be the only person who is just as mucked up as he is. Jillian is trying to embrace her new life in Nebraska but she’s having a difficult time letting Jessica go. As Jillian tells Jessica’s story to her deaf neighbor Lilith, we learn that the devil really is in the details. Merely knowing that Jessica was abducted and forced to watch her best friend murdered is nothing compared to finding out exactly what she witnessed. While it’s true that very few people would come out unscathed after witnessing their best friend murdered, once the details were revealed it put Jillian’s behaviors in a whole new light for me. Her unique pre-abduction past is probably the only reason she’s still functioning even if her coping skills are less than ideal. The sex scenes are a mix of sweet and loving (Jessica’s past) and rough and violent in a fight for dominance (Jillian’s present), and both types are hot for entirely different reasons. The relationship that is developing between Jillian and Sarge works for them, but it will difficult reading for some and is not for the faint of heart. Because of their pasts, their relationship has an edge of violence that may be problematic for some readers, so do proceed with caution.

This is the third book by Ms. Ann that I have read and I still find myself blown away by her talent. She is able to combine elements of romance, suspense, hot sex, and humor to make her damaged characters feel real, and in the case of End of Day she has added a darker element with Jessica’s past that I didn’t expect, and she makes it all work. I will warn you that this book is a bit slow to start, but when you’re dealing with what is essentially a non-government-sanctioned witness relocation program and the first book of a series there is a foundation that must be built. However once the story got going I absolutely hated when I had to put it down to attend to other things – there was no getting lost on social media for hours while I read this book. Nope, I did what I had to do and returned to the book immediately because I wanted to see Jessica and Jillian’s story unfold and the way in which Ms. Ann wove Jessica’s past into Jillian’s present was fabulous. Even knowing that Jackson and Jillian ended up in Peaceful Woods didn’t make their journey there any less interesting. On the contrary, I was mesmerized by what Jessica endured before she became Jillian. I loved that rather than her past breaking her and turning her into a scared and submissive woman, she’s a scary as hell badass that has no problem dishing it out or taking it. Unlike Idle Bloom and Only Trick, there is little healing between Sarge and Jillian in this book, but as it’s only the first in the series I suspect that there is much more to come. I do so hope that Ms. Ann is well into the writing of the sequel because I need it yesterday.
