Stars, Stripes and Xmas Bells by Kaitlin Maitland

Everything has gone downhill for Ashton since the hot summer night she spent with a military man she hardly knew. Her career is in a shambles, her dreams of traveling abroad are impossible, and her love life is in the toilet. Worse, one of her coworkers has decided she’s the perfect girl for him. Too bad her heart is fixed on the guy she kissed beneath the fireworks on the Fourth of July.

Trip McKinloch has never been the favorite son. McKinlochs are supposed to settle down close to home, marry, and help run the family pub. Instead, Trip joined the Air Force, has lived overseas for years, and is in love with a woman he shared one night with during his Fourth of July leave.

When Trip goes home for the holidays he is shocked to discover that the woman he cannot forget is now working as a bartender in his family’s Pub. Worse still, Trip’s brother Gavin has a hefty crush on Ashton and a grudge against Trip that could spell yuletide disaster. Now Trip has to find a way to convince everyone that the footloose McKinloch has finally found the one woman who feels just like home.

Veronica☆☆☆☆
Trip and Ash meet on the 4th of July and have a one night stand knowing the next day Trip is returning to Afghanistan. They meet again a few days before Christmas and are still hung up on each other but Trip's brother Gavin is interested in Ash and this puts a spanner in the works.

This is love at first sight kind of story so if you don't like "insta-love" this might not be the story for you. I loved it though. When the right person comes along, sometimes you just know. I love that this couple jumped in with both feet.

Trip's family are an interesting bunch but I hated the way his parents treated him. His mother was nothing more than a wolf in sheep's clothing. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and getting to know Trip’s siblings.

The first in a series about a close family who have been working together in the family bar for four generations. (I read book 4 a while ago, and have been looking forward to getting the back story.)

Trip, however, bucked the trend and joined the Air Force. Often away serving his country, he had a mad evening of passion with a woman who captured his attention before leaving again. Now six months later, and still thinking about her nonstop, fate takes a hand. Ash, all alone in the world with her dreams and terrible self-image, is also unable to forget that one night. And even when everything goes wrong she holds onto that one bright night.

I really enjoyed the buildup – the unlikeliness of it all and the trust that they had in each other. I liked the family dynamics, and look forward to reading about the other brothers. For a short story, there is enough plot and passion to make for a worthwhile read. Thank you Ms. Maitland.
