Better When It Hurts by Skye Warren

Five years ago we lived in the same house. He was the ultimate bad boy. And my foster brother.

Now he’s back. Tougher, harder, meaner. All of it aimed at me, because I was the one who sent him away. It’s payback time. He wants his pound of flesh, and I am helpless to say no.

I came into this book not realizing there was a prequel, however, I didn't really feel that I needed to read it. Then again, I had a hard time connecting to either of the main characters so maybe it would've helped.

Hannah aka Lola had a bit of a split personality. The side she used to get through the rough times in her life (aka stripping and the men she had to put up with because of it) and the side that was the hurt, little girl who grew up bouncing from foster home to foster home. I felt her pain, I did. I understood that she'd been through a lot and was simply trying to make ends meet while taking care of the only foster parent who took care of her. I couldn't understand her ying yang personality. I couldn't tell if she was genuine or being sarcastic most of the time she was with Blue. The way her reactions and emotions were written were confusing and hard to understand since they weren't explained well in my opinion.

Blue is angry (or so we think) at Hannah because of what she did in the past. He's come to find her and make her pay (I think). While he was a sexy character I could never get a good feel for what he was feeling. One minute he'd hate her and the next love her. I understood that he was confused and dealing with the emotions he'd had for her from before she'd hurt him so badly. However, I felt like while he didn't know what he was doing, he didn't explain what he was going through very well at all and since we only get Hannah's POV.

In the end, the most interesting character I found to be Candy. I wanted to know what was going on with the boss man more than I really ended up caring about Blue and Hannah.

I didn't find it particularly dark either. It was just angry sex to me more than anything. I wanted to FEEL what they were going through and see them emotionally connect about what they'd gone through and WHY they'd gone through it. I wanted to FEEL the sorrow and pain from mistakes made in the past. And in the end I didn't really.

However, the book was well written and I quickly read it. There was enough there to have me flipping through the pages searching for that connection, but when I finished the book, I was left feeling like I was still hanging because it just didn't quite get there for me.

(Enter Lord's name in vain here!) This book was sooooo dirty! Comeuppance should be spelled CUMUPPANCE...just for this book. Blue was possessive, and foul mouthed which makes him totally swoon worthy. As head security for a strip club it’s Blue's job to make sure none of the girls get hurt but he goes the extra mile for Hannah. Hannah always thinks the worst of herself except for when she's stripping on stage. Her foster brother watches her and she knows he wants to be more to her than just security. After an incident in her childhood rips them apart, he finds her again and this time he won't let her go! Five stars! Amazing read!

This is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. I am definitely looking forward to the next book – which surely gives Candy her chance...

This is not an easy read, and drags the reader to places which are tough, undesirable and downright painful. The foster system doesn't always work, and these two people have had the worst start in life. But through a series of incidents, and some clearly intense feelings, things can be righted. Harshly erotic, and by turns touchingly gentle, this is a meaningful story. The little touches of humanity in a harsh world, bring enough light to give the reader hope that the author has a plan!

A good solid read, which pricks the conscience as well as heating up the atmosphere!
